It doesn't look like much fun.

(1,077 posts)Yes, a lot of us endured. You did your duty. My dad was in WWII. I spent time in RVN.
Yes we endured. We honored our country as asked or volunteered.
What we have in our country is precious. I'll lead in preserving it.
BTW, the rally in our little town turned out approximately 100 folks.

But yes, it was our teen years, so, lots of memories...some searing, some sweet.
Here's another CCR from those days:

(638 posts)All the diseases from fighting in those same trenches day in day out while you hope you could gain a little ground. I remember watching the Roosevelts documentary by Ken Burns and you see these veterans with their mouth clamped shut or twitching endlessly or sights of the chemical burns. It was horrible just seeing it let alone witnessing it first hand or having to deal with it.
But I'm sure that not visiting the graveyard of our dead soldiers 100 years after the end of the war was too hard since it was in the rain for our feckless dear leader. Quentin Roosevelt who died fighting in that war had his birthday on the day the war ended as well. President Theodore Roosevelt never really recovered from that loss. Trump will never know such loss or care to know. POS.

(638 posts)But yeah you make a good point. The civil war and the revolutionary weren't unnecessary wars either. But pretty much all the others were avoidable one way or the other.

(2,396 posts)written to a soldier that was killed in the Battle of Argonne Forest, Lester R. Cory of Grafton, IL. There was a surpring amount of information online about him. He was injured by machine gun fire on October 11 right before the war ended and subsequently died a little later.
I'm kind of attached to Lester. He was a farm hand, age 23, that got called up to service in May and went over to France in July. Then dead in October.
I guess I just wanted to tell people about him. He deserves to still be known.

(638 posts)My grandfather fought in the largest naval battle in history in the battle of Leyte Gulf in WW2. His aircraft carrier sunk by artillery shots and was the first one off the boat. His group huddled together in the shark-infested waters and he went between groups to keep everyone up to date with what was going on. The people who looked or the water containers didn't care and put sea water in them so they were undrinkable.
Near the end of the battle on the aircraft carrier he saw a man running around on the deck without his head. My grandfather is one of only ten surviving members of his shipmates. He won't admit it but the war took a heavy toll on him and rarely speaks of it. But he is proud and a strong man. A better man than that piece of shit that holds the oval office. He would probably say he likes people who's aircraft carrier didn't sink. All while never serving.
Kittycow
(2,396 posts)Yeah, that would take a heavy toll on a person.
Your grandfather had so much courage! I hope he knew at some point that there were many grateful citizens for what he went through when the highest duty called.
It's so galling to have that POS supposedly representing us in France right now
ZeroSomeBrains
(638 posts)His best friend died on that aircraft carrier. The idea that someone could represent the United States of America who has no idea what the symbolism means to have respect for the fallen and visit those who lost their lives is astounding.
I'll never forget this or the kids in cages or the rampant fear-mongering. It just seems to show the character of the man. We will have a hard time picking up the pieces after this is all said and done. I just hope the rest of the world can forgive us one day.

(721 posts)WWI. One of the darkest moments in human history.
The total number of military and civilian casualties in World War I was about 40 million: estimates range from 15 to 19 million deaths and about 23 million wounded military personnel, ranking it among the deadliest conflicts in human history. The total number of deaths includes from 9 to 11 million military personnel. Wikipedia.
