get the Presidency and Trump possibly go to jail after he loses re-election, if he gets indicted after he leaves office? With a Dem in office and indictments get handed down he is pretty much screwed other than trying to win the cases.
These scenarios must be going through his mind.

(17,863 posts)They he resigns before the next President assumes office. Pence, whose political career would pretty much be over by then as well, pardons him. Pence does get his name in the history books as a President.

Trump has been able to deny responsibility for all of his failures throughout his life. Why would he think that anything would change now? After all, he's now the "most powerful man in the world" and who could harm him?
Trump won't be removed by impeachment and conviction in the Senate. He'll leave as part of a deal when his criminality is unimpeachable.

Accordingly, impeachment (and conviction) is not a pardonable offense.
You can't be pardoned for having been impeached.
