Band blasts Romney for using their song (nice blast)

Say They Dislike The GOP Candidate

The Huffington Post | By Kia Makarechi Posted: 08/15/2012 7:49 pm Updated: 08/15/2012 9:08 pm

The Silversun Pickups have asked Mitt Romney's campaign to stop using their song "Panic Switch" at events. The band has issued a cease-and-desist order and released a statement Wednesday, roundly denouncing Romney and his campaign.

"We don't like people going behind our backs, using our music without asking, and we don't like the Romney campaign," frontman Brian Aubert wrote. "We're nice, approachable people. We won't bite. Unless you're Mitt Romney!"

<snip>

The band suggested that Romney's use of the single was ironic because "he is inadvertently playing a song that describes his whole campaign."

Full Statement:

Seems as if the GOP is once again whimsically ignoring our great nation's laws to do whatever it wants to do, and shooting itself in the foot in the process. Without any regard for copyright or intellectual property laws, Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney has, without permission, begun to use Silversun Pickups' 2009 smash "Panic Switch" at campaign stops across the country. Neither the band nor its representatives were contacted to gain permission for the use of the song and the band has no intention of endorsing the Romney campaign. The band's attorney issued a cease and desist today.

"We don't like people going behind our backs, using our music without asking, and we don't like the Romney campaign. We're nice, approachable people. We won't bite. Unless you're Mitt Romney! We were very close to just letting this go because the irony was too good. While he is inadvertently playing a song that describes his whole campaign, we doubt that 'Panic Switch' really sends the message he intends."

OK, never heard of them, but damn that's a nice swipe.

1. Why is it

Aug 2012

that everytime a band has had a song stolen and used without their permission, it's been by a republican?

Aren't the republicans for "law and order"?

Silversun Pickups Tell Mitt Romney To Stop Using 'Panic Switch,' Say They Dislike The GOP Candidate

I know you posted in GD, but the original title is better than the generic one you picked.

I've never heard of them, and I suspect I'm not alone here, but even if I am, so what?

i guess the article is better with your title. sorry to offend you by suggesting the band's name is important; or that the actual author's chosen title is important.

I noticed a lot of uncivil discourse here on DU lately where people seem to just tear down others. Your original post was really uncalled for and your apology rings hollow.

8. the apology seemed hollow because i thought the response was unnecessarily dismissive

the original title of the article mentioned the band's name which I think is important.

This wasn't uncivil discourse. Disagreement is a fairly common state and should be accepted. Incivility is pretty obvious.

Edit: Changed uncivil to incivility

in this forum. I must say this is this is the first time I've seen a poster attacked for choice of title in a forum other than LBN.

didn't deserve to be omitted. Truthfully, I just don't understand the thought process that goes behind making a descriptive title generic. Why leave out a fact when you don't have to? Maybe it's my one semester of journalism.

I have no idea who this band is. Never heard of them. I'm supposing many others at DU haven't either. It doesn't make much difference to most of us. Perhaps the OP would have edited to put in the name of the band if you had asked instead of criticizing - perhaps not. We'll never know.

12. Another example of bad staff work from the Romney campaign.

These guys can't get the basics right. Doesn't anybody on that staff know to get permission for music they use? Don't they remember the embarrassment that has caused their campaign and other Republican campaigns in the past? Pick up the phone!

Imagine a White House run by these incompetents. 'Cause you know, the campaign staff becomes the winner's White House staff. Man, they'd start a war with Canada.

Some repuke has to stop using music on hi campaign when the songs creators do not wish to be associated with them in any way.

This has happened far too many times, how many - a dozen or more, for it to be simple errors by campaign staffers. Repubs thrill at the chance to piss off Dems and this is just one more tool they've chosen to do so. Pathetic.
