ROBBINS, Ill. Witnesses said a Midlothian police officer responding to a shooting inside a south suburban bar shot at the wrong person early Sunday morning.
After security asked a group of drunken men to leave Mannys Blue Room Bar around 4 a.m. Sunday, witnesses said someone came back with a gun and opened fire. Security returned fire, and according to witnesses, 26-year-old armed security guard Jemel Roberson apprehended one of the men involved outside.
"He had somebody on the ground with his knee in back, with his gun in his back like, 'Dont move,'" witness Adam Harris said.
Soon after, witnesses said, an officer responding to the scene fired at Roberson killing him.
"Everybody was screaming out, 'Security!' He was a security guard," Harris said. "And they still did their job, and saw a black man with a gun, and basically killed him."

(33,643 posts)Ya know I'm curious if this establishment required their security workers to wear some sort of recognizable uniform while performing said task ... because if they did not, and yet had sanctioned ARMED people to do their security work ... they are extremely negligent.
Nobody should ever be armed security (or security at all, but ESP. if armed) without having to wear clothes that scream out 'security' in one way or another.
I have to believe the cop wouldn't have done this, had he known ... but I've been wrong before.

(16,926 posts)a good point. I can't imagine how any officer would be able to tell on a moment's notice who is the "good guy" and who is the "perp."
This would apply to all of these "good guy with a gun" scenes who the NRA and IQ45 claim would help save the day.
Should they be looking for the person wearing the black hat or mask?

(33,643 posts)And even in this scenario which is nominally a 'good one' ... you have a crowd of people shouting what probably sounds like a jumble of voices saying 'don't shoot security guard', and how do you KNOW they're saying the guy with the gun, who has someone pinned to the ground, is in fact 'the security guard', as opposed to the person who's pinned to the ground being the security guard?
I won't say for ONE SECOND that had the Security Guard been white, he wouldn't have stood a MUCH better chance of NOT getting shot in the scenario, to be clear.
I'm definitely interested to hear how this young man was dressed for the job. Because NO business owner should have armed security without making them wear obvious 'I'm a security guard' gear at ALL TIMES.

(16,926 posts)just watched Amazon's Jack Ryan (it was great!!!) and a terrorist group staged an attack in Washington dressed as an EMS crew - created an incident, then moved about freely with the other "real" EMS crews.
Tell me, how would you know the "good guys" from the "bad guys" without stopping to ask for ID - in the midst of a crisis?
(of course Ryan saved the day - but is he available 24/7 throughout the US?)
