Mississippi's Senate Race Is Suddenly Competitive

“A U.S. Senate runoff that was supposed to provide an easy Republican win has turned into an unexpectedly competitive contest, driving Republicans and Democrats to pour in resources and prompting a planned visit by President Trump to boost his party’s faltering candidate,” the Washington Post reports.

“Republican Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith stumbled recently when, in praise of a supporter, she spoke of her willingness to sit with him in the front row of a public hanging — words that, in the South, evoked images of lynchings. She has struggled to grapple with the fallout, baffling members of her party and causing even faithful Republicans to consider voting for her opponent, former congressman Mike Espy.”

“That Espy is attempting to become the state’s first black senator since shortly after the Civil War made her remarks all the more glaring.”

I see no actual evidence that the actual vote will be competitive.

Mostly we did PAC fundraising for candidates/campaigns. One of our clients was this guy in Mississippi who was "attempting to become the first black congressman elected in Mississippi since the reconstruction." And Mike Espy became Congressman Espy.

Here is to history repeating itself! Go Mike!

this is gonna be low turnout election so if dem voters show up, we can win this. It is harder to supress votes when turnout is low, every vote counts. We need all who voted two weeks ago and much much more. I hope Oprah does gotv, she is badly needed there right now.

and let others deal with the racism and stupid stuff out of Hyde-Smith's mouth... That's what surrogates are for... Pound the issues.. Healthcare and inequality and living wages for all.

You may have missed the fact that the damning videos of Hyde-Smith are circulated by an outside PAC over which Espy has no control, by law.

If MS can avoid Kempification, Espy can win. Hyde-Smith has already hinted that she'd love to duplicate Georgia's distortion of the vote.

I drove through MS yesterday. Vicksburg to Mobile, AL.

All I saw were McDaniel signs, the segregationist Hyde-Smith beat. I guess if all his supporters stay home because they consider her a RINO then Epsy might stand a chance. That would be sweet.

And BTW, every time I drive thru MS it feels like a third world country. And I am from Louisiana and Arkansas! Jackson is the saddest Capitol city I have ever been in.

I donated to Espy right after the runoff was declared.

Sorry if you come to DU for positive reinforcement. I come to discuss and hear political talk. The good and the bad. I live in the political hellhole red south. Admitting reality does not mean we are not fighting to change that reality.

2 of the 3 were republicans. They collectively got a large majority of the votes. Assuming those voters combine is a pretty safe bet.

In another post I said it was the worst state in the country. Which is too bad. When I drive through it I always think, the state is beautiful. But then you stop and have to deal with the people. I'm a damn yankee, though. What do I know?

Mississippi has all the bad you get in the surrounding southern states and very, very few of the redeeming qualities you find in those states.

Have a reprehensible excuse for a human being like Roy Moore or Cindy Hyde-Smith on the ballot and hopefully the voters’ disgust will overcome party loyalty
