Nothing will get past both the Senate and House so Repubs have no agenda.

The Dems will investigate everything giving Repubs the choice of sticking with trump or acting independent of him.

Repubs will have to run someone against trump in 2020. Pence could be their pick. Giving Pence a few months in office before the election is in their favor.

Trump's base would be outraged. Turnout for Pence would be abysmal. The Republican Party is better off suffering losses in the short-term until they come up with a more savvy and charismatic demagogue. That's why the only Republicans who challenge Trump are the ones retiring from Congress.

Unless the Republicans turn against Trump and will vote with the Democrats to convict, impeachment will be seen as political grandstanding and divisive and will probably loose us the election.

You want to win an election? Then we need to try to advance legislation that helps people or the environment or does something else constructive.

It shows that dems can fight back and drain the swamp. People who went for frump said "All politicians are the same." This would taint frump as the problem and the dems as the solution. It would mean the gop would own everything bad about trump.

So, I say, impeach the bastad!

There is so much else to do that needs to be done, so there's no point in playing into their hands. Impeachment does not remove a president from office, just ask Bill Clinton.
How many would like to see Trump impeached even if it helps him to get reelected?

And in the unlikely event that the Senate convicts and Trump is removed from office, we will be left with President Pence, which would be an even worse nightmare. I’d rather have the bumbling idiot remain in office for the reminder of his single term and get nothing done. I would like to see Trump indicted, tried, convicted and imprisoned after he leaves office. We just have to cross our fingers that there are no more vacancies on SCOTUS.

Nixon was re-elected with one of the highest margins ever, but faced impeachment when the public became outraged and Republicans in Congress had to drop him.

Impeaching Trump will happen if, and only if, the outrage reaches Nixonian levels. Otherwise, he'll just whine about how he's being treated and too many people will accept it.

Even if Mueller comes out with impeccable evidence, there will never be enough GOP senators to vote to convict. Better to concentrate on humiliating him electorally.

Let him run and be defeated, taking with him GOP senators.
That will also clear out more plausible GOP candidates, as Cruz et al aren't brave enough to challenge him. We'll have the way clear then for a real Dem majority.

That's not to say the Dems in the House should avoid confrontation. They should hold hearings all the time, drive home the idea of the criminality of the entire administration. That actually wouldn't come out in an impeachment trial, as there isn't enough time for all the evidence to be presented.

Shame him in House hearings, then humiliate him at the polls.

convict is a fool's errand. The only thing that would be accomplished would be to even galvanize the mouth-breathers who adore him even further, and give the rest of the cowardly rethugs cover to snipe at the 'cowardly political assassin DemocRATS'. Let the House do its job with subpoenas and investigations while Muller's investigation plays out. With any luck at all, his findings will be so devastating that any Rethug lawmaker with an I.Q. higher than water's freezing point will bail on him in self-preservation.

Sun Nov 18, 2018, 03:20 PM
Nov 2018

Demagogues use the politics of division and resentment to make themselves the focal point of every action. Direct attacks on the demagogue become equivalent to attacks on his supporters and distract from the fact that the demagogue has not solved any problems.

They way to fight the demagogue is through policy. Democrats need to focus on passing good legislation. If we pass a bill to improve healthcare, the Republicans have to go along with it or come up with something better. If they do, great. If they don't, it's an issue for 2020.

On edit: We should still investigate. If there is enough to turn Republicans against him, then we can impeach him. But I don't foresee this happening now. The base is too brainwashed.

On one hand, the Dems could be seen as vindictive and power mad just in time for 2020 (Irony, thy name is Republican). On the other hand, every day he stays in office, he's killing our environment, our laws, and our standing around the world.

Things could look a lot different in the next several months, either way.
