BY ALEXANDER BOLTON - 11/20/18 06:00 AM EST
There are growing signs that the economy will slow substantially over the next two years, posing a significant problem for President Trump and Republicans who highlighted economic growth heading into the 2018 midterms.
Goldman Sachs on Monday issued a report projecting GDP growth will slow to 1.8 percent and 1.6 percent in the third and fourth quarters of 2019, sooner than anticipated and creating a major headwind for GOP candidates the following year.
The banks chief economist, Jan Hatzius, wrote in a note to clients that tighter financial conditions and a fading fiscal stimulus from the 2017 tax reform and spending packages will be key drivers of the deceleration.
The Goldman Sachs forecast is in line with a Congressional Budget Office projection from August that called for GDP growth to slow to 2.4 percent next year and then 1.6 percent in 2020.

(6,377 posts)1. If the economy falters in 2020, Trump's done.
It's all he has going for him.

Just as we get back the House, the economy starts slipping. Republicans run on it, idiots believe them because they have no idea how government works and we fight for our lives.
We won big time in a good economy, a bad economy might not be the crippler for them that it should be.

I think the artificially stimulated "good" economy is about all much of the Fox News crowd has going for them. Trump is constantly promoting the good parts of the economy, though we'll be paying for the Trump/Ryan tax cuts for a lifetime.

Trump's drooling 35% base will believe that, nobody else.
