Send one for me. Well old enough to remember Polio, Measles, Mumps, Rubella (German Measles), and Chicken Pox. How did I ever survive to reach the age I have without all those vaccines?

Seriously I'm from a family of 9 kids and I'm pretty sure we all had them at one time or another. Polio was something to be feared of course, and we all got our polio vaccinations early in life. But the other things were expected and tolerated. Nobody knew about the chicken pox turning into shingles (later), so we weren't avoiding any of those. Nowadays it's a different story, of course.

Enough of the population has to be vaccinated so that there is "herd immunity" to protect those who cannot be vaccinated, like newborn babies and people with weakened immune systems. I have a friend who was left sterile by a case of the mumps. I have tinnitus from having measles as a toddler in the late 50s.

About the sickest I have ever been in my life was with measles when I was about 8. The other time I was "scary sick" was with influenza when I was in my mid 20s. I don't recall flu shots being pushed then, but you can bet I get a shot every year now.

That was my meaning in my first comment and I was talking about measles, mumps and chicken pox.

There was even a belief in the 50's when I grew up, that mothers should go out of their way to get their kids exposed to these diseases early and get them over with. Especially the mumps because we knew even then that boys should get mumps before puberty, not after. My father never had mumps as a kid, and every time one of us kids came down with mumps my dad had to go to the doctor and get vaccinated against it. It's horrible and painful for post-puberty men, and possibly can make them sterile too.

I realize those days are over, but a lot of us baby boomers had a different experience than kids growing up now. The "anti-vaxxer" parents of today didn't grow up in the 50's and are getting bad advice from somewhere.

there are also a lot of other wonderful gifts. This holliday season, I think my gifting wiill probably include several of these inspired gifts:

Reading through all of that made me realize ( well, I knew already but it really reinforced it) how lucky me and my family are. We have a roof over our head, a warm house, clothing, food, etc.. when so many are living in dire conditions all over the world.

So when my kids were born, I heard about a vaccine for varicella and thought “what does anyone need that for? It’s a nuisance disease!” But I vaccinated them anyway and after a bunch of 20 something coworkers got shingles, I asked for the shingles vaccine at my checkup last month. I was told there is a national shortage and it won’t be available again until January.

About a week and a half ago, I started getting pain in one side of my face. Then it went numb and I was in excruciating pain. After an MRI for a brain tumor showed negative (whew!), a little red spot appeared on my lip. Then two more on my cheeks, my ears, and in my mouth. The pain was unbearable and since I work in healthcare, I could not work.

I’ve burned a week and a half of sick time being treated for shingles in the trigeminal nerve. I’ve possibly lost my hearing in the left ear, nearly got it in my eye, and may have lost my taste on one side of my tongue.

Darn nuisance disease, eh? Get the frickin’ vaccines for your kids and for you...if you can find it.

At least it wasn’t polio. Support for these folks seems like a fan-frickin-tastic idea. Measles can cause horrible problems. Rubella causes dreadful birth defects that can kill. Diphtheria WILL KILL PEOPLE. Vaccines all the way.

Contagious phase. If we can keep these kids from getting polio through a $19 donation...game on. I just have to find the right anti-vaxxer to dedicate.
