https://www.politico.com/story/2018/11/24/cindy-hyde-smith-segregation-high-school-mississippi-senate-1012700Cindy Hyde-Smiths embattled bid for another two years in the Senate hit another race-related hurdle this weekend, as a report in a Mississippi newspaper revealed the Republican incumbent graduated high school at a segregation academy.
A photograph from the 1975 edition of the Lawrence County Academy yearbook, published Friday by the Jackson Free Press, appears to show Hyde-Smith among a group of cheerleaders including a mascot holding a Confederate flag who appears to be wearing a costume imitating a Confederate generals uniform. A sophomore girl in the picture is identified in the caption as Cindy Hyde.
Following the Supreme Courts 1969 mandate that Americas public schools must immediately be desegregated, Lawrence County Academy in Monticello, Mississippi, was one of many high schools established in the South on behalf of white parents who did not want their children to be educated alongside black students.
Lawrence County Academy opened one year after the Supreme Court's order, in 1970, the Free Press reported. Hyde-Smith graduated in 1977, meaning she would have been enrolled elsewhere at the time of the academy's founding, according to the Free Press.
Hyde-Smith would go on to enroll her daughter at Brookhaven Academy, another Mississippi segregation school founded in 1970, the Free Press reported.

This school was wrapped up in the glorification of the Confederacy and is relevant.

(7,609 posts)4. I'm hoping that the change will be from the whites as well. As a white male that
was born in Mississippi, I can tell you that witnessing the civil rights movement first hand in the late 60's changed my life forever. I personally think that it is perpetuated by a cult-like mentality. Like cigarette smoking once it becomes "unacceptable" most people will change their attitudes. I view racism as a crime against humanity.

It wouldn't surprise me if her ancestors participated in public hangings since she would like to be on the FIRST ROW if there is ever one held where she can watch gleefully.
Keep digging Mississippi journalists. We need you to expose this racist before it's too late.

But I imagine quite a few southern Democratic politicians went to private schools that were created in response to Brown v BOE.
I'm not so sure we want to get in the habit of impugning politicians based on where their parents sent them to school.

Like DeSantis's blatant racism in Florida, this is how they turn out Republican voters.
