Rep. Beto O’Rourke won’t rule out a 2020 presidential bid

By Michael Scherer November 26 at 4:41 PM

EL PASO — Rep. Beto O’Rourke, who built a national following and a deep fundraising base during his unsuccessful bid for the Senate, would not rule out a run for the presidency, telling constituents at an El Paso town hall that he and his wife were considering next steps.

“Amy and I made a decision not to rule anything out,” he told reporters afterward, admitting that his position is different from the one he took on 2020 during campaign.

O’Rourke, 46, a three-term congressman from Texas, would enter the race with less elected experience than many of his rivals but a proven ability to excite Democratic voters in a political era dominated by President Trump.

In a crowded field that could number more than 20 candidates, charisma is likely to be key to attracting attention of early voters and the small-dollar fundraising that most candidates will need to survive the early stages of the primaries.

I believe Beto needs a little more national experience/exposure prior to a presidential bid. John Cornyn's seat will be up for re-election in 2020.

Or Joe Kennedy III? (is he eligible to be on the ticket yet?) ... 16 years of that level of leadership (the VP running in 2028 and 2032 and extending the healing of the nation in the process) is definitely going to be needed to recover from the compounding stench of POTUS 45 and his cabal of thieves, grifters and fools...

Imagine the sight of Beto and Cheeto onstage for a debate...and imagine Beto delivering a round house flying elbow to Cheeto's face if he tried the stalking / invading personal space crap again...oh, be still my heart.

No one's asking, but it would be dumb for me, or anyone, to say no 23 MONTHS BEFORE THE ELECTION.

In a perfect world, he'd be the VP on a ticket with Kamala Harris or Amy Klobuchar, work his tail off turning Texas blue, and then take over after the 2028 election.

I also could see him being Biden's VP, and Biden only committing to serve a single term.

I think Beto can win in Illinois but not in Texas.

I’m of the opinion that a Democrat won’t win any statewide race in Texas any time soon... maybe by 2022.... big maybe. For now, Texas is just too red.

And damn near pulled off a pretty huge win in red Texas. I've heard people say this here and I can't understand at all the logic behind it. What does coming a couple percentage points from flipping a senate seat in Texas have to do with whether he's a good candidate for president?

My younger daughter 36 who is independent leaning right since her husband has been military officer for years, lives in Texas and they both voted for him.

Same kid that informed me a few months ago, sorry mom but I am more conservative than you you have to accept it.

They are republican moderates that have no home.

We could get those votes, the youth vote. Latino vote.
