I think there was a "cat and mouse" game between Mueller and Trump, with Manafort in the middle. Then, when Mueller did not get the answers from Trump on time, he gave the 10-day extension to Manafort. We can only imagine the conversations that went on between Trump's lawyers and Manafort's lawyers, since they had an agreement to share information.
