(13,877 posts)I read/skimmed the entire article, and not one word about Castro. I think his time maybe came and went. They brought him in as HUD Secretary to get him to Washington, but that was the last I heard about him. Being a state senator and mayor...Beto is a US Representative. Both of them are awesome...but Julian maybe not ready to compete at a national level? Same as Beto, however. Will be a fascinating unfolding.

(25,327 posts)He's just been mayor and HUD secretary.
Wish he would have run for TX governor, but he didn't want to lose.
I like him alot, but San Antonio has a weak mayor form of government.

(13,877 posts)I just love his story...his Mom...his background...how I wish both of them would be major players. He was too early for a purple or blue Texas, to be sure. Hope there is a place for the Castros and Beto. The all deserve it.

(25,327 posts)Everyone was there. I learned so much. I wish I could have attended every session.
Mexican-Americans had come up on the short end of the Civil Rights Act. They were not protected under the Voting Rights Act until 1975. The symposium was truly a great experience with lots of famous names and unknown names that I didn't recognize until I researched them.

It's interesting to think about that alternative reality and maybe winning Florida and AZ.
I look forward to hearing more from him.

(25,183 posts)divide the vote one more way?
My worry? We get to convention time, and we have 6-10 "viable" candidates, none with over 20-25% of the delegates needed for a first ballot victory. Then, the superdelegates get involved, and the whole thing is seen to be giving all of the also-rans the shaft, and their supporters get disgruntled, ala 2016 with the Berniebots.

(25,183 posts)And doing it in a half-assed way, like was done this year, is not the answer. But, we have to go through a crisis before we figure out how to avoid it happening again, then we have to hope that the history will not repeat itself years later.
I have some fears for this next political season, it's not like the old days where the megadonors would decide who was viable after only a few caucuses and primaries, the Internet makes it possible for a 5-10% candidate to raise funds to keep going all the way to the convention.
Trump beat out well over a dozen candidates for the GOP nomination, all of which were better qualified than him, by being a total asshole. We don't have that option, at least I hope not. I have to wonder what, if anything, will lift one candidate to the status of having enough votes for a first-ballot victory by the summer of 2020.

(20,190 posts)His only elected office is mayor of San Antonio. He should challenge John Cornyn for Senate in 2020.
