It is President Trump, to Vice President Pence and then Speaker of the (GOP) House - Paul Ryan.
Come January swear in date - things change.
Thoughts?

Yeah - right Paul. You're getting out of dodge while the getting is good.

(46,125 posts)Trump resigns or is removed. Pence because president and chooses a vice-president. Pence resigns or is removed. Pence's new VP becomes president. That's how Gerald Ford became president, although the Nixon's VP went before Nixon did.
Paul Ryan or Nancy Pelosi are not going to become president unless Trump and Pence go at the same time.
Chances of President Pelosi are between infinitesimally slim and none

(31,261 posts)Also, Ford was high on the House hierarchy, so approval was a given.
My guess. If there is information on serious criminality by Trump and Pence, neither one gets to select anyone. Pelosi may become the only logical choice to keep the country from blowing apart. If Pelosi is seated, don't look for ambitious new stuff from her other that backing out the worst actions of Trump and doing an infrastructure bill. She will be largely a placeholder until the 2020 election.

(64,933 posts)It may well happen that one branch approves and the other doesn't, thus leaving the seat unfilled. After what McTurtle did with a SCOTUS nominee, I have no problem with the House and Nancy Pelosi refusing to accept any Republic Party nominee as VP.

(46,125 posts)That's why Nixon chose someone non-controversial and generally liked. I know of no rule that says the president or vp can't chose a replacement for the empty seat. You could make an argument that, after the first has been removed, the second doesn't have a chance to chose a replacement before he, too, is removed. I guess that would be like removing both at once and the speaker would become president. What a whole can of worms. But that's what you get when you install a corrupt imbecile as president.

(31,261 posts)I would think that any replacement he picks will likely get rejected, at least by the House. With a lot of republican Senators up for reelection in 2020, my guess is they would be leery about backing a scumbag. Pelosi may be the only choice since she is likely to only be a placeholder until the election of 2020.
Yes my friend, it is one damned big can of worms. And one that we did not have to deal with, but people who were too pure to vote for Hillary or just did not vote put us here. Deplorables are going to be deplorables, but if the rest had it's stuff together, there was no way they would have elected that monkey and his ass-kisser.

(46,125 posts)You could be right that they'd refuse to confirm someone nominated by an obvious crook/traitor. On the other hand, they might feel it's too dangerous not to have the office filled. And if the crook/traitor picked someone everyone liked and respected, they might go for it.
The question I find most fascinating, though, is what do we do if a president is indicted for a serious crime? I don't believe the Republicans will ever remove this usurper from office. So, what happens if he's indicted for money laundering for the Russians? Can the police go to the White House and frog march him out in handcuffs? I must admit, I'd enjoy that more than anything else.

(31,011 posts)But, even if they somehow got tRump out and impeached, pence will take over. The repubs will have to hope they can somehow salvage their party. The only way that will happen is if the repubs finally do the right thing and put country first. That'll only happen if hell freezes over and Jesus moves in to redecorate.

(109,021 posts)that heavily damned them both -- to the point where they decided to resign.
But I'm sure they would want a promise from Pelosi to pardon them, as Ford pardoned Nixon.
And at this point, I don't think I'd blame her if she agreed. If we could get rid of both of them at once and replace them with her, we'd be better off.
And later on the State attorneys general could go after Trump, at least.

With Pence and the current Senate it's entirely possible that House and Senate will be unable to confirm the same person , so if Pence is indicted or impeached after Donnie Two Scoops succession matters
Speaker Pelosi better have her contingency plan ready

(94,901 posts)There is NO possibility that the House Speaker (Ryan or Pelosi) will become President unless you find a way to SIMULTANEOUSLY IMPEACH AND CONVICT Trump and Pence.

Pelosi is smart and competent in all areas, and the sound of winger heads exploding would be deafening!
