(206,016 posts)He received no information about it until he and Rosalynn returned to Plains. Turns out that because of serious mismanagement and three years of drought the family farm was in a lot of debt. He did nearly lose both the farm and his nearby family home which he had helped to build himself. It was only by selling the Carter Warehouse to pay down the debt that he managed to keep the farm in the family.
