BUENOS AIRES President Trump plans to attend the Washington funeral of former president George H.W. Bush and is designating next Wednesday a national day of mourning, the White House said Saturday.
Trump, who is traveling here in Argentina for the Group of 20 summit, was notified overnight of Bushs passing. He is planning to speak by phone on Saturday morning with the late presidents son, former president George W. Bush, to offer his condolences on behalf of himself, first lady Melania Trump and the nation, according to a statement from White House press secretary Sarah Sanders.
President Trump and the first lady will attend George H.W. Bushs funeral at Washington National Cathedral, Sanders said. A state funeral is being arranged with all of the accompanying support and honors, Sanders said.
In addition, she said Trump will designate Wednesday a national day of mourning.
Trump did not attend the last major funeral in Washington, that of former senator John McCain of Arizona. The president had long feuded with McCain and was not welcome at the services, which were attended by former presidents Barack Obama, George W. Bush and Bill Clinton. Trump also did not attend the funeral of former first lady Barbara Bush. Melania Trump did attend that service in Texas, as did the Obamas and (sic).

They will be there. Whether he speaks or not (I am thinking "not" but we'll see) is still up in the air.

(26,262 posts)I heard today that GW will be speaking.
I know it's too much to hope for a Meghan McCain style eulogy coming from someone.

(128,957 posts)he was probably asked to speak (and if Poppy was too ill at the time, then Shrub probably made the request). I am thinking that trip was to tell him that they were going to pull the plug.

(26,262 posts)I disagreed with so much that he did, but I also know he was much loved by his family, and gave them much love in return. There is nothing as horrible as watching a loved one suffer into death. I've seen far too much of that happen and it's one of the few things on my 'I wouldn't wish that on my worst enemy' list.
When I was watching (I think) CNN, this morning, they were giving a very two sided appraisal of GHWB. Also saw John Meacham talking about him. It was very interesting.
Experienced that with my Mom a few years ago and we put her in a hospice... and fortunately that ended up being for no more than a couple days before she passed peacefully, after almost a week in the hospital.
I have mixed feelings here because I know from whence he came and what he did - including buying into Atwater's Willie Horton mess. But his deeds never rose to the level of the sickening evil I see happening right now.
