Former First Lady Michelle Obama offered a candid assessment of the reality of trying to balance a marriage and a career and the idea of leaning in.'
Marriage still aint equal, yall. It aint equal. I tell women that whole you can have it allmmm, nope, not at the same time, Mrs. Obama said at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn on Saturday night. Thats a lie. And its not always enough to lean in, because that shit doesnt work all the time.
The crowd erupted.
Mrs. Obama then said she forgot where she was a bit when she said shit.
As New York magazine noted, leaning in is a strategy touted by Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg in her book Lean In: Women, Work and the Will to Lead. The book encourages women to assert themselves more in the workplace and not voluntarily give up career advancement to make room for marriage and family roles.
Mrs. Obama, however, made it clear that doesnt always work. What does work, she noted, was finding people that believe in her even if it doesnt come from the places where you might expect it.

(53,776 posts)maybe not "lean in" but "work around" the obstacles in our pathmeaning the many who don't believe in us because of their unconscious, and in many cases, conscious racism.
This confronts African Americans and other POCs constantly in work and school situations and the more one develops the facility to work around it, as I said before, even to outsmart the racists, the better off you are.
And often times it has to be handled diplomatically to avoid repercussions and vindictiveness from those who place the obstacles in your career path.
It's called living while black in America (see BBQ Becky, Permit Patty, et al, not to mention all the police shootings of unarmed AAs like Bothan Jean and Philando Castile and countless others).
