General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsI watched much, but by no means all, of the GHWB coverage. The WORST commentator was . . . .
. . . . Chris Matthews. Maybe we can take up a collection - a GoFundMe, maybe - to buy his mouth a FILTER.
He was corrected by co-commentators more than a few times, notably a sometimes dismissive, almost prickly, Nicolle Wallace.
There was contemporaneous video evidence of HRC and Jimmy Carter talking in what appeared to most to be a warm and friendly manner. Never mind that Carter is notoriously introverted and "apart" from the other members of "the club". Even in view of this, Matthews stated that Clinton and Carter disliked each other.
There are the repetitious Tip O'Neal references. The tales of "Philly" and his Republican family members.
Pretty sad.

(17,276 posts)The big three broadcast networks had it. Same video feed. We turned down the sound on NBC, then listened to the commentary from PBS newshour, including some historians.

(33,414 posts)I didn't watch all of it, but what I did watch on CBS had no commentary. That was appropriate, IMO. More like actually being there. The commentary began after the vehicles started to leave.

(11,304 posts)And he seems surprised when he hears things that a well informed viewer is aware of.
But I'd take him over Chuckie Todd any day.
At least Matthews will call a spade a spade when he sees one, Todd won't, worried he'll offend someone.
He's pitiful.

(14,249 posts)I almost threw my shoe at the TV when he started talking about what a perfect candidate Biden what be. That's appropriate commentary for a funeral?

(16,386 posts)But it has been time for Matthews to retire for quite a while now. I find him painful to watch nowadays.

(25,551 posts)The commentary is plain old silly. I feel like the silence makes them nervous, so they come up with silly nervous type chatter. Every once in awhile, I would get some insight, but usually it was meaningless.

(17,276 posts)Doris Kearns Goodwin, among others, doing commentary before and after the funeral. It really makes a difference. And Judy Woodruff was very good, too.

(2,959 posts)Mathews verbiage. But Cheney's look. It said "let's go hunting some time soon." the "asshole " was invisible. It made me think "here's one more thing we agree on, old adversary." The other is LGBT rights.

(28,272 posts)I know I seem to be beating this drum incessantly, but Matthews is an increasing embarrassment. His memory lapses, his coughing fits, his trashing of Democrats, his constant interruptions of guests, and oh dear God, his continuing and unending on-air efforts to boost sales of his books---MSNBC wouldn't have to look too far to find a much better replacement for that time slot---probably at half the salary.

(9,197 posts)Tweety was on an election night panel where Olberman (see it was several years ago) was the anchor. He started blathering something, and Keith told him it was inappropriate. "That's why they call it Hardball," Tweety announced proudly. "This isn't Hardball. It's election coverage." Tweety shut up.
