How are they legal? Who stops these fascists?

(25,111 posts)This is not a democracy. It will be overturned. Hopefully the Republican party will die slow and hard.

(10,176 posts)Flipping every State position in the most recent election was a Herculean task and the beginning of the end of the Koch/Tea Party/radical evangelical (Walker's group) strangle hold on us. A step toward a return to normalcy and decency.
But those who follow our State politics will remember our Supreme Court election was cheated too, along with Walker's elections and the recall. So we have an absolutely crooked Supreme Court too.
We need to somehow get past this legally and then get to work. Number one is to end the gerrymander. Otherwise we will never again have a democratic legislature here. It's almost not possible now even when we win a huge majority of the votes.
It's sickening.

(19,114 posts)Democrats, every step of the way, have been failing at evaluating the opposition honestly. Our side needs to get a better understanding of their opponents. We're still playing the game of Democracy, which is what good Americans should do, but we need to recognize that their side isn't interested in American Democracy any longer. They do not believe in Democracy and they do not believe they represent or even should represent the will of the people.
Once you publicly and completely recognize that the Republican Party is no longer playing the game with in the confines of Democracy, anticipating what they will do next is possible.
Republican leaders do not feel that all Americans need to be represented, they feel only their voters are the Americans worthy of representation. There are no rules anymore. Dems should still play by the rules as best they can, but they need to start anticipating much better.
And that flows all the way up to Trump too. For 2020, nothing is off the table for him, nothing. There's an endless list of things he's done that no one thought he would do and if presented with the possibility before it happened, most Dem leaders would have said, "If he did this, it would be a bridge too far, the GOP wouldn't even stand for it." or "If he does that people will take to the streets." Well, he's done this, that, and a whole lot more. Here's one, what will the Dems do when Trump sends law enforcement to arrest his 2020 opponent's campaign workers and staff?

(7,529 posts)The only thing I would add is that I don't think the repub officials are interested in representing their voters so much as they are in representing the elites who fund them. They may fight for some things near and dear to their base like abortion or "immigration" (meaning less POC here) but if you look at the things they are trying to restrict in those states they often are issues the Koch types fight, things like minimum wage increases or Medicaid expansion that would help many of their own voters.

(146,331 posts)The last gasps of a dying political party. They will do as much harm as they can possibly do before going down to defeat.
The same strategy is likely to be attempted nationally. In fact, Donald J. Trump is working on it even now.
