(56,828 posts)if you are an individual donor, you will need to check off which industry you work in when you donate. So, when Frank the Financial Analyst at ExxonMobil, Helena the HR Manager at Chevron and Peggy in Purchasing at Valero each give $25 to a candidate it shows up as O'Rourke (or whoever) getting $75 from the Oil & Gas industry.
Yes, I know there are places where management can pressure employees to donate to certain causes/candidates, but in all the public corporations I've worked in, the only time I've experience pressure to donate from a public corporation was when a major insurance company strongly encouraged employees to give their "fair share" to The United Way. Never to any political cause. It was expected of executives to give the United Way. ("Fair share" was generally $100 to $400 for regular employees and $1,000+ for executives)
Now, I did work once for a non public company based in Massachusetts that did send out a package to employees that said that they would prefer that employees donate to Republicans (this was in the early 2000s when Mitt Romney was running for governor of Massachusetts) - I had tossed the package in the garbage at my desk at work. It was back in my in-basket the next day. I mentioned that to my co-workers and was told that if I did not want to donate, I should take the package home and dispose of it there.

(14,249 posts)Every time anyone who worked for any Wall Street firm - whether they were an executive, a trader, a secretary, coffee boy or janitor - donated a nickel to her, - their own Senator - that contribution was used by some (including Democrats and certain "allies" to accuse her of being in the pocket of Wall Street.
It was accusation bullshit applied to her and it's BS applied to Beto.

(56,828 posts)right after he gave an impassioned plea to vote against Jeff Sessions as AG - yes, Booker took PAC money the first time he ran for senate (11% of his donations), but the PAC donors to Booker were primarily the legal industry and the entertainment industry, two reliably Democratic donors/industries.
So, almost all the donations from the pharmaceutical industry were individual donors, and there are nearly 500,000 people employed by pharma and pharma-related industries in the tri-state area (NJ, NY and CT) and Philly.
But, that's not what the headline in the NY Observer said - it made it look like he was in the pocket of Big Pharma. The Observer was run by the Kushner family until the end of 2016, and then by Jared's hand-picked successor after that.
