Compassion for those Democrats in Wisc., Michigan, NC, Georgia, Florida...

Last edited Thu Dec 6, 2018, 10:50 PM - Edit history (1)

This is genuine heartache with the happenings in these states. The radical republican power grab lame-duck bills, fraudulent election practices, voter suppression and more. All those who worked so hard to get your Dem candidates elected and for this crap to happen. I offer genuine compassion. I don't live in any of these states, yet I am having a lot of emotion about what is happening.

Giving up is not an option. Going through the grief of this is necessary and real.

These republican #?!#%&!!! are really going for one party rule. We can't let this happen!

I just wanted to offer compassion to all that live in these states, especially those that worked so hard for a candidate that won, or for a referendum that passed. How awful to have it stolen! Damn!!! This is a horrible wounding to all of us and especially those closest to the crimes.

Rachel said that North Carolina's Governors race a few years ago was the test case for Wisconsin and Michigan's power grabs right now.

To take back control of the judiciary, we must:
- Make DC a state (add two D senators)
and perhaps
- Add four more SCOTUS justices to compensate for stolen Gorsuch, Kavanaugh seats.

Wisconsinites have made some progress through protests already.

A Lame-Duck “Legislative Coup”: Wisconsin GOP Stages Last-Minute Power Grab Before Dems Take Office

[snip]

RUTH CONNIFF: Well, this is the one piece of this package of legislation that did not make it out of committee. So, it seems that the Republicans have been shamed into dropping their effort to change the date of Wisconsin’s presidential primary.

[snip]

There was so much news about this and so much protest, that it never made it out of the Joint Finance Committee. That doesn’t mean it won’t come up again on the floor. And it’s starting to get light outside, so maybe they won’t try to include that in their package now.

9. Here's what you can do: Make DC a state

We need control of both houses in 2020 to start to defeat the Republican party.

https://www.vox.com/2018/12/6/18127187/beto-2020-president-senate-map

Democrats need to win to pursue fixes
In the longer term, obviously, Democrats need a structural fix for their map woes.

Admitting DC, Puerto Rico, and the US Virgin Islands as states polls well nationally and would partially offset the current partisan skew of the Senate. It’s possible that the actual inhabitants of Puerto Rico and the USVI wouldn’t go for it (the state of DC opinion is a lot clearer), but there’s no earthly reason Democrats shouldn’t pursue fair referenda and quick statehood for these Americans territories. In the longer term, more exotic ideas — like dividing California, Texas, Florida, and New York into a larger number of smaller states to bring population disparities closer into line with what the founding generation experienced — are worth pursuing.

But none of this is possible without winning an election first, and to win that election Democrats are going to have to fight on a skewed map.

The ongoing power grabs in Wisconsin and Michigan should remind Democrats that if the 2020 election leaves Republicans in charge of the Senate, they will likely use that authority in unprecedented and aggressive ways that make it completely impossible to govern.

Make DC a state. Give PR and USVI the option. Then start appointing real Democratic and real American judges who will overturn the undemocratic gerrymandering and power grabs.

Starts at state level, but we must fight hard. That means making DC a state to add two Senate seats.

The Republican majority will never allow it so you have to control the Senate first.

our Governor isn't a total RW nutjob which has helped in keeping the Tbaggers from totally destroying MI. But they are trying their best to burn all bridges that lead to anything good before they get the boot. I hope they all rot in hell along with those who voted for them.

Even though more Democrat votes than Republican votes were cast in North Carolina the Republicans still "stole the farm" & walk away with a stolen republic but we're ready for next time! I'm urging everyone to stay encouraged!
