I wouldn't assume they're desperate just because they're lying in increasingly obvious and bizarre ways. Their technique of the Loud Lie and the Quiet Retraction served them well during eight years of Shrubco. It's just part of their arsenal, now. If it ever stops working for them, they might stop. I don't see that happening any time soon.
