We planned to all come home today early and love on him one more day.
We wanted out vet to take one more look at him and then.....
Just got home and found him in our bedroom. He's passed.
17 years. Thanks buddy.
This post was from last weekend.

(9,426 posts)Beautiful little jet black cat. She was 17 or 18, too. I bawled like a baby, at the vet plus driving home. I keep thinking she is still here at the house. Very, very difficult thing to have to do. You have to love them enough to let them go. Cleo was having difficulty breathing, walked hugging the wall her eyesight was so bad. Loved her so very much.

(26,060 posts)I had to let my Butch go in early November (after having to let his brother, Sundance, go last February). It's heartbreaking. If you think you're up for it and it wont interfere with other pets, I adopted two kittens right away and couldn't be happier. I don't miss Butch any less (best cat I ever had) but these two make me smile every single day.

(182,799 posts)Sundance. Didn't have pets for a long time growing up. His sister Pepper passed away last summer 2 days after the eclipse. We were at the beach. That was a long tough ride home.

(26,060 posts)Obviously it's the hardest part of being a pet owner Do you have others at home? My new guys came from Pet Rescue - they're also littermates who I've named Felix and Oscar (and have to explain to anyone under the age of 35 why that's funny). Life is better and sweeter when we have furry friends to come home to.

(26,060 posts)I thoroughly understand if you are. My kitties were a birthday present from my twin. Have you looked into fostering - I have cousins who love doing that. Someone who clearly loves animals as much as you do should be around them in whatever capacity.

(26,060 posts)you express that as it sounds like you will be one day. I hope it's soon and speak on behalf of all the furry ones that need loving homes like yours. If it's because you're so sad, I urge you to reconsider - you are clearly someone who has enough love in your heart to grieve and still love some more.

(4,756 posts)they all lived to almost 17-18. it was tough.
Took some time out from kitty litter, house sitters at al. 5 years without cats was too long.
Went to the rescue in Feb and got us a new tabbie 6 month boy and a month later got our little ragamuffin girl at six weeks.
They are best buds and bring us much harmony and balance.

(9,265 posts)17 years is a great run. You gave him a good life.
That happened to my Freddie (my DU alias) 3 years ago. We knew he wasnt going to get better and made an appointment at the vet to say goodbye. He beat us to it earlier that afternoon.
A month later we got a pair of kittens and theyre awesome. But there will never be another Freddie.
My wife will be home hopefully in about 30 minutes and then little one will be home from school about 4.
I keep looking at and swearing I see movement but I know it's not.
Our cats were something else. The girl was a champion mouser when we lived in an apartment, the boy took the high ground. We nicknamed him "The General" and the girl "The Troop" singular

(37,648 posts)I never got totally over any of them. I tell myself I won't get another, so I don't have to go through this. But then I think, well, I get rescues. So at least I can give some dog or cat a good life for the time they have left.
They're so innocent and loving. It's so hard.

When you left this morning and said goodbye
He looked at you with his loving eyes
from his favorite spot on the bed.
You thought he'd be there when you got home, instead
Sundance knew his time with you was at an end.
Quietly he went to sleep one last time.
He saved you the agony of making that call.
His love for you was the greatest of all.
He loved all the years he spent with you,
Sundance was your buddy, your pal and your friend to the end.

(182,799 posts)I read it to my wife when she got home and found out. She was very touched.
Last night we were in the kitchen loving on him and trying to get him to eat.
His "sister" passed last August very unexpectedly. They were together 15 years.
He leaves us and tries to open a kitchen cabinet, he then went to the top of the stairs and let's out a yell (like he used to at the girl), goes down to my bathroom and looks around the shower curtain, later he sat in the front room looking at the Christmas tree, and then went under the dining table.
These were all things she did. She was a regular under the Christmas tree and under the dining table - my daughter is notoriously careless. He was a top of the table cat not under it.
You were right. He knew.

(24,753 posts)were well known many moons ago on DU from pictures I posted here. I'd say they'll greet your boy at the rainbow bridge, but Althea would be hiding somewhere afraid to show herself to anyone but me and Quinn would be too crotchety to care.

(32,083 posts)She had kidney disease, too. I had her for 17 years and one week. One can keep telling themselves that 17 years is really, really old for a cat, and that they're no longer in pain, but it sure doesn't make it hurt less.

(30,738 posts)We gave our gray kitten to a friend. He named him Earl Grey. They were together for seventeen years.
Our friend had bypass surgery. Earl Grey was there for him. Then, Earl Grey got too sick to get off the couch. They sat together until the kitty passed.
They are our friends until the end.
