The country wouldn't have been blaming the Navy Seals for sheer incompetence. Even if the mission succeeded and we lost a soldier- even the German Shepherd- Republicans would have put the blame squarely on the head of the Commander In Chief, and perhaps rightly so.
Now they're resurrecting the "Obama didn't do it" to take away one of the crowning achievements of this administration shortly before the election. Needless to say, the timing isn't a coincidence and
it's the height of dishonesty that they're pretending there was no risk on the president's part in approving the mission his predecessor was afraid to do.
President Obama rolled the dice and put his faith in the military for a mission that could have easily ended his presidency in November. That he didn't come up snake eyes and get our soldiers killed is what really upsets these "patriots".

(25,406 posts)Bungling, incompetent, ignoring military advice, naive, arrogant, etc. It would have never ended.
And that's why it was such a courageous and gutsy call.

(466 posts)I read the book detailing the plan to get Osama, and I think they had a number of contingency plans concerning what would have happened if it failed.
One thing is for certain, if information regarding a failed strike to get Osama resulting in the loss of SEALS leaked to the American public, we wouldn't ever hear the end of it.
It'd be a hard blow against Obama's re-election chances.

I forget the name of the book, but it was actually pretty good, and offered plenty of insights into getting Osama Bin Laden. It really showed that the decision to take out Osama was not as simple as lots of republicans make it out to be, and that Obama truly made a gutsy decision in doing so.

(2,702 posts)If Pakistan would have responded to us invading their airspace and it became Seals versus Pakistani military, I think it would have come out.

(23,222 posts)al-Qaeda would've been crowing non-stop at the top of their lungs, Pakistan would be screaming to high heaven about the "violation of sovereignty," every anti-US government in the world would be trumpeting it--yeah we'd have known about it, and the Repukes would never let it die, rubbing the Dems' noses in it every chance they could create.

(10,270 posts)You can almost bet that a Republican Administration would have fucked up the planning/execution of said mission, based on the fact that that's how it went down in Tora Bora, under His Majesty the Shrub.
As an Electorate, the general mass of the American People might be rock stupid, but in this case, they know full well who issued the kill order (and took the political risk that came with it) and who didn't. McConnell and his cadre of sad clowns can cry all they want. It won't do them ANY good, and any Republican dumb enough to bring it up in a debate is going to find themselves on the wrong end of an ass-whooping stick.
And yeah, that picture is awesome.

The fact that a handful of Seals would throw their Commander-in-Chief under the bus using baseless charges, reflects so poorly on their personal integrity. It's very shameful and sullies the uniform they wore.
But knowing Barack Obama, he probably forgives them.

The success of the mission is Obama's military/foreign policy trump card, so Mitt the Rethugs are trying to take it off the table. Who do they're think they're kidding?

(22,000 posts)But if it had, I think Obama would have taken a ton of heat for it. It was a gamble for sure and whether you agree with the decision or not, it shows he has the guts to take action. I don't even want to think about what would have happened if the mission had not gone the way it did.
