I'm glad I didn't hear the news from that asshat.

I was listening to my favorite radio station when they made the somber announcement and then began playing his songs.

When they were doing a game in DC. John still didn't really understand the game but their was someone else at the game who had the time to watch with him and explain. President Nixon. The story goes that they watched much of the game together just off to the side of Cossell, Meredith, and Gifford.

I remember that evening vividly for a lot of reasons, heard it on a car radio driving through downtown Columbus.

came on (first time I had heard it) and the phone rang and my roommate yelled down the hall "John Lennon's been shot and dead on arrival!". I stayed up all night that night and there were a lot of red eyes at work the next day. Hurt then and hurts now,

The place where I worked at the time -- we were all young and into music - I remember we were all in shock the whole day.

And, yes, his music is totally relevant today.

His ode to his son, Beautiful Boy, in particular always struck me as premonitory:

I can hardly wait to see you come of age
But I guess, we'll both just have to be patient

How we need you now. Politically and musically. The Beatles have been my favorite band since I was 5 yo.

Every time there’s been some political outrage in the news. What would he have said - or done - or sung?

Miss you a lot, John. You would have had a field day with this whole trump misadventure.

I was in the car when I heard it on the radio and I remember as I cried and did what I had to do meeting the eyes of so many shocked, aching people. We all knew we were experiencing deep pain and a sense the world was reeling.
