POLL: How Trump Leaves WH

Would he step down before 2020? He would lose his power to pardon, friends, family, or the outrageousness of pardoning himself. Plus, the presidency is protecting him from indictment. The good news is, he will be gone one day.

If he leaves early and Pence replaces him, then he gets pardoned like Nixon was. After he's out of office, then the prosecutors do not have to hold back on indicting him.

I do think impeachment and removal from office is the appropriate thing to happen to him. I just don't believe the Senate GOP will vote to convict. They've proven they are too afraid of his cult. I don't really think that's going to change with the evidence Mueller has. His cult, and more, felt it was perfectly fine for him to not pay taxes. They thought it made him a great business man because he figured out how to dodge the IRS. So their anger will not be roused by financial crimes. They've already started thanking Putin for getting him elected. So they're not going to be angry about the obvious conspiracy to get him elected.

A very large part of America will say "yep, he cheated and broke the law - so what?" Seriously, they won't care. They hate Hillary and the idea of her being President THAT much.

We talk alot about Trump's health issues here on DU. But what we see isn't always what we get.
He also is very prone to gaffes...like not reciting the Apostle's Creed. (Bull in the china shop stuff)
He also picked horrible staff and then fires them. This is stuff the general public notices.

I haven't been following his recent rallies. (TX, MO, GA etc)
If he needs to show up in a golf cart etc, then it will hurt his re-election chances.

I also think people voted for Trump cuz they wanted "something different". Voters can be fickle.

And how much "energy" Trump has.

When he's in official duty, he's "off"...(we also tend to overemphasize his issues)

I haven't been following his recent campaign rallies.

If Trump is in good campaign mode, then he has a good chance.
If he shows up in golf cart, gets short winded etc., then odds are against him.

He could get more votes than 2016 or he could get less. He barely won last time. Much will depend on WI, MI, and PA.
Can he win if he loses those states? As long we keep NV, CO, and NM?

Will we need Ohio?

I think Florida is a lost cause.

The odds I see are 50/50

ETA: Based on 2016 map, if we take WI, MI and PA and keep all the other states we won we will get 273. I don't know if maps will change in 2020.

More info: Electoral map will be the same as 2016. Source: Wikipedia. Census change will take effect in 2021.

Sat Dec 8, 2018, 11:25 PM

...would have given Clinton 232.

I can't see Trump winning any of the states that Clinton won. And a couple factors at play in 2016 won't be at play in 2020. I'm thinking of Comey and a nominee who faced ruthless attacks for 3 decades.

I think PA and MI will go back to being blue, as they had been for 6 straight presidential elections prior to '16. Same with WI, which had been blue for 7 straight.

I don't think Florida is lost. Historically, Florida is red in mid-terms and purple in presidential elections. It was very close in 2016, extremely close on November 6 (for Governor and Senate), and I think we can pull it out in 2020.

I think our nominee will have a good chance of winning NC and AZ, as well. Even OH, GA, IA and TX could be in play.

Just by putting TX, AZ and GA in play, we force Trump (or whoever) to campaign in those states.

That said, the days of a nominee winning 400+ electoral votes are long gone. Obama's 365 in 2008 is probably the most we can hope for.

I voted for health incapacitating him before 2020. Having been around an uncle who ate very poorly his whole life never eating vegetables and also having a mental disorder is that it almost seems like the person invincible but later you realize signs of their demise.

I argue that he has had many mini-strokes at this point and it is showing in his vocabulary and inability to control himself. The sad thing about this theory is that he will probably end up in a hospital bed having to have his adult diaper changed in the middle of the night and be in a wheelchair for a year until he has almost no ability to live a life as we think of it. But I'm sure the rest of his family will be behind bars for the rest of their lives. Womp womp.

I was 7 years old when Nixon resigned on August 9, 1974.

I get why the majority of my fellow DU members are voting that Trump will be voted out in 2020. I to believe in the power of the ballot.

This country's institutions is being incredibly tested, or more so, as it was back in 1974. The GOP has gone further right than the party of Nixon, Reagan, Bush 41, and Bush 43. They have become complicit and protective of an established criminal and a Russian asset who is continuing to disgrace the Office of the U.S. President in such destructive methods.

This is my thinking... If, and a really big IF, the Republican Party would have any desire to save themselves, they can't look the other way after Mueller submits his team's findings. The Republicans of 1974 had no choice but to insist that Nixon resign. It was a hard break but it was for the sake of their party's leader facing certain impeachment and conviction.

What's the difference?... Look at the poll numbers. Nixon's approval rating during 1973 was between 40-30% and was forced to resigned. Clinton's average approval rating in 1998 was 62.8% and he came out on top despite impeachment. Trump is now skating at 39% (take out the outlier pollster Rasmussen) with possibly more crimes than we can count on our one hand.

Perhaps my naivety of faith towards the constitution is more than my faith in the electorate. The electorate failed us in 2016. I swore to support and defend the Constitution of the United States six times during my 24 years in the Air Force.

If we don't have faith in our Constitution, then what's the point?

I think Trump will lose it and threaten something so extreme that even the Republicans can't ignore it and the cabinet agrees to invoke the 25th.

He requires both hands to hold a glass of water, can't grip when he shakes hands, and can't open doors or close an umbrella. He could do all of those things a year ago, so he's degenerating.

I think it's a combination of #1 and #3, he won't admit to a health problem but that will be the reason. He'll give a speech about how he's a turnaround artist, and he's achieved a series of stunning wins, America is great again, and now he can go back to the private sector leaving the country in the capable hands of Mike Pence.

I think the neurological problem is why Melania holds his hand -- she's his crutch.

It pisses me off to think of him getting health care and pension at the expense of taxpayers. He needs to be removed from office in disgrace.

After losing the 2020 election he must be forcibly removed from the WH by a SWAT team. The whole time he will screaming at his base to avenge the liberal coup, which they will attempt to do.

...that's remarkable and a testament to the crazy times in which we live.

I'm torn between resignation and him losing in 2020. Either way, he'll have to protect his ego. He'll say he wants to return to running his empire that's under unjust attack, or that the country doesn't deserve him. Or he'll claim the election was stolen and do what he can to incite violence.

It's hard to say what would be more damaging for him.

I think GOP leaders will present him with the choice-- step down now or we'll primary you. And if he has any ideas about quitting the GOP and running third party, they'll let him know that he'd forfeit the GOP's protection and risk impeachment.

they could steal the damn thing ..and Ill bet the planning stage is now in progress.
I expect Democrats to retake the Senate and I believe McConnell will be defeated this time with fair election and closely monitored in Ky.

The Republicans are well organized and have several ways of stealing various states..
Take a look at Fla. OH, NC and other Republican controlled states.

Yes.... Trump will resign for business reasons.

Or, they'll slip some polonium in his tub of KFC gravy. Or, they'll look the other way when one of the well-armed rubes that put him in office realizes that Trump is the one screwing him/her over, and he/she decides to pop him. The presidency might protect him from indictment, but it won't protect him from people who hate him enough to take him out. And, it will be someone from his own side, as they're the ones with the record for doing that sort of thing. He's surrounded by people who would probably prefer to see him dead, and have Pence take his place. Pence, included.

While sitting and tweeting on his gold plated porcelain throne, Trump accidentally drops his phone into the mess. He gets up, turns around to retrieve it, trips over his dropped trousers, hits his head on the rim, and drowns in his own shit.

Karma can be perfect.

And manipulative timing...i.e. bankruptcy for many failed ventures.

He will wait until the very last second and then resign and flee the country. Then he will live out his few remaining years as a maverick fugitive hero to his fans always blaming Hillary and the crooked Dems.

Fixing our own mistakes is important for a national sense of closure on this embarrassing, ridiculous, frightening episode. American democracy needs a vote of confidence. The people who deluded themselves into supporting this traitorous, walking travesty need to see a strong majority run this crook out of town

He's in his 70's, terribly out of shape, doesn't watch his diet, addicted to caffeine (and other stuff, according to rumor), stays up all hours of the night, under tremendous and is always angry. He may or may not finish this first term alive but there's no way he makes it through a second.
