I always said when I get animals again I'm going to adopt a puppy and a kitty at the same time so they can grow up to be pals.

But, when I was probably 10 years old, we had an older mutt and a pure-bred rottie puppy (my dad, the cop, rescued him from an abusive neighbor ... but that's another story).

The older dog seemed to hate the puppy and was constantly pushing the puppy away because the puppy always wanted to play or wanted to eat out of his dish.

One day, I was in my front yard playing with the puppy when a car drove by. The driver of the car saw the puppy, stopped got out of the car. As he approached, he asked if I wanted to sell the puppy and I told him "No."

The man kept approaching, so I raised my voice telling him not to come in my yard. The man kept coming, so I stood between the man and the puppy.

The man, clearly not threatened by a 10 year old boy, kept coming. Then, he stopped and started backing away, as the puppy started barking.

When I turned around, I saw that the older dog was sitting behind me and the puppy was standing between the older dog's legs and raising holy hell.

All I could do is laugh as I imagined the puppy saying, "come on ... f@#% with me now, punk!" And I imagined the older dog say, "The little bastard may be a pain in my ass; but he's MY bastardly pain in the ass!"

I used to have a little mutt dog named Maxine. She was only about 5 pounds but would take on anything that entered the yard - man or beast. I watched her chase off a doberman, on day and TRY to intimidate a horse, but the horse just wasn't buying it.
