Don't impeach because there are not enough votes to convict. They would be losing their minds, screaming impeachment every fucking day. They would have shut down the government long ago.

(3,473 posts)a reason for us to do it anyways. I'm not saying we shouldn't, I'm just saying you need to have a better reason than because "Republicans would".

(1,990 posts)When investigations uncovered enough outrages, public opinion forced Congress to act. Congresspeople were getting bombarded by public messages. I expect the same thing could happen now. So it is too early to count Senate votes yet; wait until Mueller comes out with more.

(32,731 posts)public opinion towards their stance. Whereas we try to discern public opinion before taking action (the same public opinion that rethugs spend their arsenal on shaping). We could do the same exact thing, but we don't.

(33 posts)The Thugs learned a long time ago how to SHAPE public opinion by screaming, ranting, framing, etc. I dont like having to admit it, but it works with the majority of the population. We cant keep assuming that if we just lay out the facts, the people will come around. If that was the case, we wouldnt have had the past 40 years of Republican domination (except for those two brief years under Obama). The people need to be lead, and in our society, sad to say, intelligent, cogent rationale thought and debate rarely gets an audience, much less wins. If we start talking about how 45 is a traitor and needs to be impeached, we stand a much better chance of actually making it happen, as opposed to sitting cautiously in the wings and waiting passively for some flaccid conscensus to emerge.

(3,145 posts)IIRC the GOP came perilously close to losing Congress over that stunt which is why they (wisely) decided to ignore calls to impeach Obama that started pretty much the moment they took the House in 2010.
The problem isn't what OUR side or even THEIR side feels about impeachment. It's those suburban moderate and conservative leaning Independents who could end up viewing this as a political act of vengeance and punish us by going back to the Trump camp .
These are the folks that helped swing the midterms in our favor and we simply can't afford to alienate them.
Let Mueller and Company do their thing, gather the evidence and then look at whether it is politically possible to begin the impeachment process.

(82,849 posts)We need to be seeding the ground with the notion of impeachment and removal from office. We need to rally public opinion with affirmative statements, instead of just depending on people to keep up with the news and figure it out for themselves. In this case, watch what the Republicans do, and do that. Liberals tend to think and act as if stating an obvious truth once should be sufficient and all the bright, educated, thinking people will get on board. That's nice, but we really need a majority of citizens on board, and the folks who are tuned in are NOT the majority.
So we need to fight against our own nature and talk up impeachment, high crimes, misdemeanors, and removal from office at every opportunity. Do we really want to depend on the chucktodds in the media to spell it out for their audiences?
