...one of those challenges that needn't be intractable is the problem of mentally ill individuals accessing guns.

I think Ohio is a state where unregulated, unlicensed, unaccountable gun sales proliferate at gun shows and the like where the vast majority of guns in the state are purchased.

so I question your premise that they are "unregulated, unlicensed, unaccountable". I also question your premise that gun shows are "where the vast majority of guns in the state are purchased." - do you have actual proof of this?

In the parking lot of a Bill Goldman's Gun and Knife Show on Sunday (the last day of the weekend long show), here in Dayton and you'll see how many unchecked firearm transactions occur at these Gun Shows.

but even they are regulated - if you sell too many, the ATF classifies you as a dealer and requires a license. The majority of sellers at gun shows are licensed dealers - they have to be if that is how they make a living.

However, when the show is over and the dealers who were in the show start selling unsold products from their trunks in the parking lot that's a problem. I have notified ATF of at least 3 "dealers" who do such business. And when a private transaction takes place in a parking lot its hard to believe that they are following state law that penalizes anyone who recklessly sells, lends, gives, or furnishes a firearm to a person prohibited by state law from acquiring a firearm.

cops don't take it seriously and the ATF is understaffed. My only point is that Ohio is not unique like the poster I was replying to seems to think.

...there's no license, permit, or registration required for gun purchases anywhere in the state, is that right? (yes)

I’m Ohio one could purchase a hand gun at a yard sale with no paper work. Not in Michigan. It requires a trip to police station for back ground check, check on serial number, background check on buyer and permit to purchase that needs to be returned.
Makes more sense to me.
