A Canadian citizen in China that Ottawa lost contact with after he was questioned by Chinese authorities has been identified by sources as Michael P. Spavor, the founder of a company that arranges cultural exchanges with North Korea

Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland first revealed that a Canadian was missing during a briefing with reporters earlier Wednesday but would not confirm the identity of the man.

Freeland said only that Ottawa had lost contact with a Canadian citizen in China after he reached out to federal officials to report being questioned by Chinese authorities. His whereabouts are currently unknown and Global Affairs Canada said they are in contact with his family.

Sources have independently confirmed to CBC News that the person they lost contact with is Spavor, the founder of Peaktu Cultural Exchange. That's a Canadian-owned, China-based firm that organizes cultural exchanges to North Korea.
