(115,683 posts)Is that like beef stew over ice cream? Sounds tasty.

(146,288 posts)of lunch counter fame. Also called a "commercial sandwich" in some places. My favorite one ever was the one I ate at a Woolworth's lunch counter in 1965.
Two scoops of mashed potatoes, some white bread covered with sliced roast beef, and the whole thing drowned in brown beef gravy.
There are variations of this, too, like a "Hot Turkey Sandwich."
For the fair, it's just the mashed potatoes, beef, and gravy. A real gut-bomb.

(146,288 posts)In fact, I just had my local sports bar and grill's version of it on Tuesday. They vary a great deal from place to place, but, it's hard to beat roast beef, gravy and mashed potatoes. I can't say I care for the bread all that much, and usually leave some of it on the plate.
You don't see it on many menus any more. Some diners offer it, and you'll find it from time to time at family-style restaurants, especially in the mid-west. I can't resist ordering a good old hot beef sandwich, usually. Some are good. Some are absolutely wonderful. Best one I ever had was at a high-end steak house that had one on the menu. Sliced prime rib, garlic mashed potatoes, and Texas toast for the bread. The gravy was full of mushrooms and onions and appeared to have been made from the prime rib roast's drippings. Yum, but amazingly expensive.

(58,785 posts)also. In fact, I stretched out the last of our Thanksgiving turkey and gravy as open-faced sandwiches. Yum! (I make good gravy.)

(1,093 posts)They'd slice the beef to order. Damn, they were good. Unfortunately, after Kroger bought the chain, Eve's Buffets were all shut down. What a shame.

(115,683 posts)At least I've never heard it called that. My high school cafeteria served something like that, only it was chunks of meat (?) in gravy over mashed potatoes. We called it Mystery Meat.

OMG...
How did I miss the part where it said From the Iowa State Fair in the first read through?
