Federal prosecutors in Manhattan are investigating whether President Trumps 2017 inaugural committee misspent some of the record $107 million it raised from donations, people familiar with the matter said.
The criminal probe by the Manhattan U.S. attorneys office, which is in its early stages, also is examining whether some of the committees top donors gave money in exchange for access to the incoming Trump administration, policy concessions or to influence official administration positions, some of the people said.
Giving money in exchange for political favors could run afoul of federal corruption laws. Diverting funds from the organization, which was registered as a nonprofit, could also violate federal law.
The investigation represents another potential legal threat to people who are or were in Mr. Trumps orbit. Their business dealings and activities during and since the campaign have led to a number of indictments and guilty pleas. Many of the presidents biggest campaign backers were involved in the inaugural fund.
The investigation partly arises out of materials seized in the federal probe of former Trump lawyer Michael Cohens business dealings, according to people familiar with the matter.
In April raids of Mr. Cohens home, office and hotel room, Federal Bureau of Investigation agents obtained a recorded conversation between Mr. Cohen and Stephanie Winston Wolkoff, a former adviser to Melania Trump, who worked on the inaugural events. In the recording, Ms. Wolkoff expressed concern about how the inaugural committee was spending money, according to a person familiar with the Cohen investigation.
The Wall Street Journal couldnt determine when the conversation between Mr. Cohen and Ms. Wolkoff took place, or why it was recorded. The recording is now in the hands of federal prosecutors in Manhattan, a person familiar with the matter said.

He is so screwed now. Mueller has had his taxes from the beginning. Now we are finding our how large his criminal enterprise has become. Not just laundering money from Russia, the Saudis, etc but his personal businesses, organizations, companies he has run for most of his life. Then comes the campaign and everything he has done since then as POTUS including taking money for domestic policies from private prisons, pharmaceutical companies, etc and everything financially related to international governments and policies.
If he isn't impeached he will be going to jail and going bankrupt due to fines and legal fees after he is POTUS. His future is done. His image, ego and personal wealth (everything he lives for) will be ruined.

(51,590 posts)who talked to paintings on the walls in the W House late at night. I would love to have the fucking moron imagine prosecutors behind every closed door and under every bed.....like an SNL skit. He is already nuts so this isn't unrealistic. Maybe that will be his defense, his mental instability. Watch him pull some BS like letting his hair become more natural (bald and grey), limping, drooling, swatting at imaginary flies, etc.

(12,232 posts)The president's fundraising total, which includes his official campaign and two other joint accounts, raised about $18 million between July and September. That brings his fundraising total since January 2017 above the $100 million mark. And he closed September with almost $47 million in the bank.

Trump has made no secret about his campaign's aggressive effort to prepare for re-election he filed paperwork for a 2020 run on the day of his inauguration and he's taken aggressive aim at potential Democratic opponents on the stump.
A never ending fountain of campaign money and never ending corruption.
