(15,751 posts)Boehner on the House floor. John had announced his early retirement from the House. Boehner, did not pronounce his name the apparent German way [Boner], understandably. Also Boehner's was known at some point as 'a lady's man', nicknamed 'Woody'.
Nancy made some polite remarks toward Boehner on the floor, live mike, ending with [a total surprise] 'Congratulations . . . Woody.' [to rolling laughter on the House floor]

(118 posts)The "Woody" quip by Pelosi is indeed really funny for speakers of American English. However, your "apparent German way" of pronunciation is not as you have written "[Boner]". The "oe" is an alternate way to write the German "ö". You can google how to pronounce o umlaut in regular "school" or "high" German, but in southern German accents and southern German dialects the oe/ö is pronounced as an "ay" just like we hear it in "Bayner". His German ancestors likely always pronounced it as Bayner.

(15,751 posts)German sense. Longtime good friend is of German ancestry, named Pffeiffer. Lot of Pffeiffer's out in the Midwest. Also my vague recollection was the Speaker pronounced it like Bahner. Anyway, I do distinctly remember seeing the video of Pelosi's face as she devilishly said 'Woody'.
I would like to see them call it what it is...the North American F*ck the Worker Agreement.
