by Ken Meyer | Dec 14th, 2018, 8:02 am
Morning Joe Contributor Daniel Goldman says the evidence from Michael Cohen and the Southern District of New York proves that Donald Trump broke the law to improve his chances of becoming president.
When Joe Scarborough asked him if Trump can withstand the legal firestorm swirling around him, Goldman answered we already now know that the president has committed a felony in order to obtain the office of the presidency.
Goldman also said he doubts Trump will be charged over this since Cohen is not being fully cooperative with federal prosecutors, which prompted him to wonder why that is if Cohen is so worried about his family.
What hes saying doesnt add up, Goldman said. If he really wanted to get this over with and get back to his family, he would have fully cooperated, agreed to be a witness, agreed to postpone his sentencing so he could get an even more reduced sentence. For some unknown reason to us, hes not doing that.
Goldman also noted that Cohens full cooperation would require him to come clean with all of his supposed crime, along with all the crimes committed by others that he knows about. To this end, Goldman concluded that Cohen must not want to admit to some additional wrongdoing that would result in a harsher sentence for himself.

(15,286 posts)1. IIRC, Cohen's in-laws are at least tangentially
connected to the mob. Then there's his taxi medallion business and involvement. Cohen's lawyer was a former SDNY prosecutor. I'd be shocked if they hadn't discussed what strategy would result in the least prison time.
OTOH, Mueller isn't investigating Cohen directly so the incentive is for Cohen to co-operate fully with him.

(10,123 posts)2. "why would someone settle for three years instead of revealing everything .."
".. to get a bigger break?" (paraphrased)
because he or someone close to him would be sentenced more if he revealed everything.
and/or
what is eventually going to be revealed about Trump would blow back on his sentencing if it came after that
I suspect the latter.
I think Trump turned his back on his country and Cohen's 3 yr deal is going to look light for a traitor.
