ATTLEBORO (CBS) When Attleboro mayor Paul Heroux found out his dog Mura had months to live, he decided to embark on a road trip of a lifetime.
Heroux and Mura went on a cross-country journey over the course of just under two weeks, checking off items from her bucket list and seeing sights such as Niagara Falls, the Golden Gate Bridge, Mount Rushmore, and the Grand Canyon.
She thinks that 8,451 miles set a new Wanna go for a ride? standard, Mura posted upon returning home.

The pair left for the trip on October 28, stopping in Canada along the way to visit Muras birthplace. In total, the road trip included visits to 24 states before they returned home on Wednesday.
Mura was diagnosed with hermangiosarcoma, an aggressive form of blood cancer. She requires chemotherapy every three weeks.

(34,499 posts)these stories always make me cry. They remind me of all of the animal BFFs I've had throughout my life and how much I miss them. Keep them coming, though--they're lovely!

Thanks for posting!
My big dog (about 250 lbs) is about to turn 7. Ripped the cruciate ligament in one hind leg almost 3 years ago. Options were: surgery or restricted movement, and the success rate was the same for each. We chose the latter.
For a while, he had to drag himself outside, down a ramp and into the yard to do his business. I bought rubber horse stall mats to make it easier for him to move from house to my shop. Took about 2 months to begin walking more than a few steps outside.
He was doing well, then decided one night he could chase a deer in the garden. Damaged the other hind leg. Shortly after that, I had to winch him up the ramp and into the house. One night he was too slow dragging himself to the door to get out and wet the floor. He was so ashamed he wouldn't come back in the house, dragging himself to my shop instead. I spent a couple of nights with him out there, talking when not sleeping. When he came out, he stood up, walked to the yard, unloaded a pond and then walked in the house.
He can walk about 250 - 300 yards at a time now.

Thanks again for posting!
