Obama urges people to sign up for health insurance after ruling striking down law

Former President Obama urged people to sign up for health insurance Saturday after a federal judge struck down the Affordable Care Act (ACA).

"Today is the last day of open enrollment," he wrote. "That means it's the deadline to make sure you and the people you love have health insurance in 2019."

"You might have heard about a federal court decision on a Republican lawsuit trying to strike down the ACA in its entirety," he added in an attached photo. "Last night's ruling changes nothing for now. As this decision makes its way through the courts, which will take months, if not years, the law remains in place and will likely stay that way."

U.S. District Court Judge Reed O'Connor ruled Friday that the ACA's individual mandate is unconstitutional, and that because the mandate is inseparable from the law, the whole policy is invalid.

The ruling will likely be appealed, and while the appeal process proceeds the law will stay in place.
