If he were to give the go-ahead to compromise, they say Congress would be able to pass appropriation measures for the Department of Homeland Security and other agencies that would keep the government open.
The six bills we have are basically written and read out, ready to go, and with this one its only a portion of it thats in dispute, so when the people who disagree come to an agreement, we can move, said Rep. Tom Cole (R-Okla.), an appropriator.

(15,051 posts)If Congressional GOPers were professional about their job responsibilities, they would compromise with Democrats sufficiently to get bipartisan supermajorities in both houses and not worry about losing votes from the far right. Then Trump's threats would be pointless bluster because he would not be able to effect a shutdown even if he tried by vetoing the bills. No shutdown, government funded, no need to consult with Trump.

If Congressional Republicans and Democrats both are against a shutdown, they can pass a continuing resolution, then overrule Trump's veto. Or is there a third party in Congress with enough seats to break a supermajority?
What Republicans really mean is that they dislike having to shut down the government, but they'll do so if Trump tells them to.
