James Comey Unloads After Interview With Republicans: 'Stand Up' to Your Fear of Fox News

by Aidan McLaughlin | Dec 17th, 2018, 4:03 pm

Former FBI director James Comey was fired up after his latest meeting with lawmakers on Capital Hill, blasting them to reporters for wasting time with questions about the Russia probe and Steele dossier.

“Republicans used to understand that the actions of a president matter, the words of a president matter, the rule of law matters and the truth matters,” Comey told reporters. “Where are those Republicans today? At some point, someone has to stand up and in the face of fear of Fox News, fear of their base, fear of mean tweets, stand up for the values of this country and not slink away into retirement. I find it frustrating to be here answering questions about things that are far less important than the values that this country is built upon,” he added.

CNN’s Manu Raju asked Comey about President Donald Trump calling his former lawyer Michael Cohen a “rat.”

“It undermines the rule of law!” Comey replied. “This is the president of the United States calling a witness who is cooperating with his own Justice Department a rat. Say that again to yourself at home.”

“We have to stop being numb to it — whether you’re a Republican or a Democrat, you need to stand on your feet, overcome your shame and say something,” he added.

Trump went on to confront a Fox News reporter for promoting what he said were Trump’s “lies” about the FBI.

he thinks he is better than his fellow repubs; the damage he did to our country cannot be erased. Violating Hatch Act is far worse than talking heads on faux.

Comey is not a hero. He is a man who was complicit, then reached his limit when he saw what he helped bring about. It is good that he is talking about it, but he definitely shares the responsibility.

That said, Fox News has been broadcasting since 1996. That is 22 years of damage done to the political discourse in this county. Because of Fox News, a large segment of people believed James Comey when he came out just before the election with his salacious information about "more emails". I would be hard pressed to say that Comey is the greater of the two evils.

Like I said, he is not a hero. He is just someone who sees the GOP going down in flames. He is a partisan and a jerk.

All in all however, Fox is more damaging. Just my opinion.

That's the 1 thing missing from his transformation: personal responsibility. Maybe the next time he's asked about it he'll be ready to fully acknowledge and apologize for what he did.

Since when? Republicans have been impervious to the rule of law at least since George H.W. Bush pardoned all those Iran/contra guys back in the dead of night on Christmas Eve 1992 after he'd lost the election to Bill Clinton. Where was the rule of law then? Just because the trial of Caspar Weinberger and Elliott Abrams and the rest of them would have put the lie to Bush's claim that he was "out of the loop" on Iran/contra, is that any reason to doubt Republican fealty to the rule of law?

Yes.

As for the truth, we just got done with another round of tax cuts for the wealthy on the premise that this time for sure it was going to create a bunch of jobs, and the wealthy weren't just going to pocket more money. The truth is that this voodoo economics didn't work, hasn't worked, and yet continues to be sold as working in the face of a stubborn reality that won't bend to Republican delusion.

Welcome to reality, Mr. Comey. I'm glad it finally slapped you across the mug hard enough for you to recognize it. Republicans can't stop, won't stop, what they're doing. A lot of us have been in agony and misery for nearly 40 years, but our pain doesn't register with the high and the mighty. If you've been numb to our suffering in the past, that's more your problem than ours.

Comey didn't seem very concerned with Trump or Russia when he announced a week before the election, that they were investigating Hillary's emails again.

His mistake was trusting that House republicans would do that. Personally, he should have just had his agency run a scan on the new source for the emails and determine that they were already reviewed (what the end result was) in the earlier investigation.

Longer term, democratic office holders should studiously avoid using anything but approved email, that was lesson #1 when I worked in corporate America. Republicans lie about crime, our side don't do crime, but always seem to get gummed up by rightwing media lying and the short attention span of Americans.
