One comment Rudolph W. Giuliani made Sunday has been getting short shrift. In one fell swoop, he offered a false legal argument that both watered down the Trump teams previous denials and most importantly seemed to actually admit to the underlying crime.
Speaking with ABCs George Stephanopoulos, Giuliani sought to argue that Michael Cohens hush-money payments made on President Trumps behalf cant be campaign finance violations if they served any kind of personal purpose.
It has to be for the sole purpose, Giuliani said. If theres another purpose, its no longer a campaign contribution if theres a personal purpose."
He then suggested that the failed prosecution of John Edwards for a campaign finance violation bolstered his point: Its not a contribution if its intended for a purpose in addition to the campaign purpose. In the case of [Edwardss lover] Rielle Hunter, right, the payment of $1.1 million was intended to shut her up and was intended to avoid embarrassment with [Edwardss] wife and with his children.

(6,113 posts)The infamous Bunny Money from Bunny Mellon did not go to Hunter or to Edwards. It was actually an elaborate scam run by an aide to Edwards and the aide's wife. They used that money to build the couple's own dream house. (They were granted immunity and thus escaped prosecution and kept the loot!)
