The moving goalpost that is the "middle class"

I was in a thrift store the other day, I was reading a book about Washington DC, it was from a long time ago, I didn't see the exact date, it described Andrew Brimmer as just having joined the Federal Reserve, so it was from a long time ago.

Anyway, there was a photo of a young black man, the text stated he just entered a profession that would net him about 10,000 dollars a year... making him a member of the middle class.

Fast forward to 2018, where the people who compose the middle class are now the poorest millionaires.

I'll have to see if this book is still there and I'll be sure to snap a photo of it.

Goes to show how class is a social construct though.
