Imagine if he and Melania had to spend the next 16 days looking at each other in the White House rather than spending all that government money speeding him from place to place at the cost of millions to the taxpayers. They had to make their own beds; cook their own meals; clean their own toilets; etc.

(25,852 posts)the WH cleaners and so on are probably considered "essential" employees.
I am not entirely sure if it's a good thing or a bad thing that a shutdown only affects about 40% of all government employees.

(3,335 posts)people who kept the lights on, the water flowing, the buildings secure, the pipes from freezing, the trains running, the computers humming. The paper pushers even at the higher levels, (I was a GS-13) were considered non-essentials. Trump is the epitome of the meaning of non-essential. And if he were a real man and believed in what he was doing, and that shutting down the government was a worthy endeavor that he whole-heartedly believed in, then he should be making his own DAMN BED to prove it. Shutting down almost the entire government and then permitting an entire White House staff to accommodate him and his plastic Barbie wife is the height of hypocrisy.

(25,852 posts)entirely certain it's correct.
And as always, Trump hasn't a clue what's really involved in a shutdown, other than he thinks it will force Democrats to fund his stupid wall. And while I don't wish for a shutdown, they really need to hold firm on this.
I don't know how many federal employees voted for him, but this is exactly what they voted for. Just like the farmers, the coal miners, anyone who voted for him and is now shocked, just shocked that there are consequences.
