(14,274 posts)No one is going to save us from this nightmare. And if the spooks or the military jumped in, we would be living a new nightmare.

(47,418 posts)I keep picturing the military or the CIA intervening, because that is what I've seen in movies and television. It is rather scary that we don't seem to have a reasonable answer to this nightmare, unless republicans get their shit together.

(47,418 posts)that behind the scenes, there are rational voices working together to prevent a major disaster, but it often looks more like Doctor Strangelove. It appears that nothing has prepared us for what is happening right now.
adVance democracy
(36 posts)But if there's one thing I've observed about us loud, fat, arrogant Americans, the one thing we excel in, light-years ahead of every other country on this planet, is innovation, of thinking on our feet. I'm confident there IS a "last resort" solution in place, and we're likely to find out in the next two weeks.
PS: I too will be supporting Biden for POTUS in '20. The stakes are too damn high for ideological "purity!"
PatSeg
(47,418 posts)for the innovation, thinking on our feet, "last resort" scenario (I remember Watergate), but meanwhile, the pragmatist in me is preparing for the worst.
We have so many great choices for the next presidential election and I agree, this is no time for ideological purity. This is about survival. What happens here could affect the entire planet. I don't think I ever appreciated what a major influence we were in the world. A delicate balance is being unraveled and there doesn't seem to be any other country capable up taking up the reins.
If Joe Biden is up for it in 2020, he could be our best choice. No time for on-the-job training.

(17,984 posts)I got in trouble for advancing the theory that Germany would invade our country and put things right. The nay sayers told me that would be a declaration of war. They forgot that Russia has already invaded our country at the highest levels and has been waging war on us for the last two and a half years.
BigmanPigman
(51,587 posts)She said that what Putin did was an act of war...cyber war and attacked our country/democracy through that means. That is treason in my opinion. We were attacked and have been fighting for 2 1/2 years as you said. This is warfare in the modern tech era.

(17,984 posts)And at the time, Merkel had just stood up to Donwald in a way that none of your elected officials had ever done. Don't see how that amuses you, that no one in our country is willing to do what it takes to get rid of a kakistocracy.

(58,785 posts)elected Trump president, currently want him to remain in power, and are mostly still supporting all these moves. That's reality, and we shouldn't get so carried away by our own worries that we forget that.
Or forget to realize that a large majority of Americans, including Democrats, would be rightfully horrified at the idea of an intelligence service plot to overthrow democracy by assassinating the president.

(22,569 posts)and they aren't going anywhere even if Trump does.
If Trump is removed by a coup, they will not go gently into that good night and frankly there will be millions on the Left who will have a problem with that as well because once we go down that road, where would it ever stop?
This experiment in democracy of the USA will be over.

(26,044 posts)...they STILL wont surrender quietly theyll accept their leaders claim that the results were due to massive voter fraud, and may well take up arms to prevent the Democrat coup.
Im reminded of the pundit who said that, when it finally becomes clear that extreme conservatism wont play in a democracy, the True Believers wont abandon conservatism theyll abandon democracy.

(22,569 posts)conspiracy which he did anyways. This would happen again if he survives to run in 2020 and he will inflame his rabid followers to violence but deny it was his fault at all.
They will view anything negative that happens to Trump as making him a martyr.

(58,785 posts)always had a duty to control the potential evils that could rise among them, as we do now. The midterms showed that majorities (the same majorities who elected Obama and Hillary plus others, including some who didn't bother to vote before) are seeing how we've been going wrong and beginning to do their duty.
