Welcome to Pollapalooza, our weekly polling roundup.
Poll of the week
Its that time of year again. Snow is falling, sleigh bells are ringing and Congress still hasnt figured out how to fund important parts of the government. In a televised meeting with Democratic leaders at the White House on Tuesday, President Trump said he would be proud to shut down the government for border security if Democrats wouldnt vote to spend $5 billion to build a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border. But that may not be a very popular stance.
According to an NPR/PBS NewsHour/Marist poll, 57 percent of Americans think Trump should compromise on the border wall to prevent gridlock, while only 36 percent think he shouldnt compromise even if that means a government shutdown.
And that reflects a larger trend in CBS News polls that have been conducted since July 2016,1 Trumps border wall proposal has generally been unpopular, except among Republicans:

(1,822 posts)We just won a ton of seats in the house, Trump's approval isnt high and the wall approval is even lower. Also we have an audio soundbite of Trump saying he'd take the blame if a shut down happened. Why on earth should the dems cave? Let the GOP take the hit on this one. It will piss off their rabid base but so what. outside of them this wall isn't popular.

(26,044 posts)All they care about is what a majority of voters in their gerrymandered districts and the areas that make up the Trump base want
because theyve seen from 2016 that they can keep control, even with a minority of the total vote.
If what Americans want was the standard, President Hillary Clinton would be wrapping up her second year in office.
