Billionaire Robert Mercer did Trump a huge favor. Will he get a payback?

https://www.mcclatchydc.com/news/politics-government/article147454324.html

WASHINGTON

The Internal Revenue Service is demanding a whopping $7 billion or more in back taxes from the world’s most profitable hedge fund, whose boss’s wealth and cyber savvy helped Donald Trump pole-vault into the White House.

Suddenly, the government’s seven-year pursuit of Renaissance Technologies LLC is blanketed in political intrigue, now that the hedge fund’s reclusive, anti-establishment co-chief executive, Robert Mercer, has morphed into a political force who might be owed a big presidential favor.

With Trump in the Oval Office, Mercer and his daughter Rebekah, who has become his public voice, seem armed with political firepower every which way you look – and that’s even though presidential adviser Stephen Bannon, their former senior executive and political strategist, appears to have recently lost influence.

Since the IRS found in 2010 that a complicated banking method used by Renaissance and about 10 other hedge funds was a tax-avoidance scheme, Mercer has gotten increasingly active in politics. According to data from the Center for Responsive Politics, he doled out more than $22 million to outside conservative groups seeking to influence last year’s elections, while advocating the abolition of the IRS and much of the federal government.

Traitors all.

Their headquarters is in East Setauket Long Island.

It is about a mile from my boyhood Long Island home. Located in what used to be a farmers field.

And Mercer's home is in Head of the Harbor, about six miles from my boyhood home.

Moved to LI summer of 1963, at the start of the LI population boom. All the fields and open space of my youth is now high density McMansions.

It is a warm fuzzy feeling to have this tenuous connection to such a real life traitorous evil genius.

Al Capone was more stand up than him and his evil spawn.

edited to add: it is weird to have connections to things. Knowing where the Mercers are as living beings gives them another dimension and does make it more personal. I used to live down the road from the school where Jim Jones taught before he went off to kill everyone in Guyana. So you have a connection to a living monster and I to a dead one. Strange world, eh?

That's another connection. My sisters late husband got his phd in math there, maybe only a few years before Mercer?

And my BIL was also big in computers, teaching computer science at UNF in Jacksonville. Unlike Mercer, my BIL was the most generous, smart, humorous, and loving person of my entire life and I miss him every day.

SUSB is woven in my memories. Mom went to work in the Admissions office around 1965 and retired around 1992. Especially when I could WALK to see concerts there. Allman Bros. Canned Heat Jefferson Airplane. And it hurts to list the shows I didn't bother to go to - Hendrix, the Who, The Dead, etc.

And the Oct 16, 1971 Mothers of Invention late show changed my life forever!
