Gatwick drone arrests: two people held over disruption of airport

Two people have been arrested in connection with the “criminal use of drones” which has caused widespread disruption to flights at Gatwick airport, police have said.

In a statement released in the early hours of Saturday, Sussex police said the arrests were made just after 10pm on Friday night.

The force has not disclosed the ages or genders of those arrested, nor the locations of where the arrests took place.

The airport was plunged into chaos on Wednesday night when drones spotted hovering near the runways forced hundreds of flights to be cancelled, delaying and stranding thousands of passengers.

I hope they have to pay for all the costs caused by the delays. And that doesn't even take into account the stress for the passengers. I wonder how long the delays were. In the EU, passengers are entitled to compensations when the delays reach a certain limit. Up to 600€ per passenger for long distances I think. That could sum up to quite a lot.

My wife and I flew BA in May 2017 to South Africa with a connection at Heathrow. There ended up being a total meltdown of their IT system that canceled pretty much all their flights worldwide. We were “stranded” in London for 2 nights. When it was all settled months later BA paid us about $3,000. And we were fortunate enough to get on a flight that got us there in time to enjoy 90 percent of our vacation. US carriers aren’t obligated to do anything.
