If Democrats called for higher taxes on the wealthy and cuts in defense spending?

Would that spell an automatic loss in the next election?

I think most Democrats have been snakebitten by the taxcuts issue. They remember when Mondale said about Reagan, paraphrasing, "we will both raise your taxes but he won't tell you..", then went on to lose in a landslide.

The same for defense cuts. If either Party says that we need to cut the bloated defense budget, the other Party will accuse them of being weak on defense and they will lose the next election. The fear in both Parties is so thick you could cut it with a butter knife.

Personally, I think it might be beneficial to the Democrats if they had the courage to ask for both - higher taxes on the wealthy and defense cuts. But courage is not something that is easily found in Washington.
