There was a little boy running around that looked to be about 5 years old. About 30 seconds before the wave, he climbed onto (I'm assuming) his father's lap. I hope that saved his life. Watching that innocent little boy running around was utterly heartbreaking.

The tectonic forces that create volcanoes don't really care about us. We don't matter to them. Also, forces of nature don't hold opinions or make decisions.
