(5,225 posts)I'd be extremely mad and insulted if a child decided to choose my tv viewing for me. It's a free country and that child is infringing on my First Amendment rights. Shame on you.. Not cool folks!

Murdoch gets people to hate brown and black people so youll vote to cut taxes on billionaires.
Fox News is absolute poison for our culture and our country. Any chance you have to take it away, you do it.
This is not a joke and this is not something to take lightly.
Fox News is poison. Turn it off.
If your parents watch it, turn it off. Its too important for our society and our democracy.

(5,225 posts)Just an offended by a guest in my home trying to choose my watching habits. What if a Fox watching child tried to turn off Msnbc on a parent?

(6,916 posts)Fox uses hate and lies to get votes for its owner, Murdoch. You are trying to equate Fox and MSNBC. Thats like trying to equate Mussolini and Neville Chamberlain. Yes, theyre on different sides. But one uses hate to harm democracy, and the other does not.
As Americans we stand against hate. That means turning off Fox.
Take a freaking stand. Stand up for your g-d country. Stop the bothsidesism. And turn off Fox.

Then it would still be much ado about nothing. And people would still lament this horrible, first world inconvenience as though wearing wearing ash on the face, and renting clothes.
Though easy to infer that TV stations have certainly become branded identity for far too many people.
Because, at the end of the day, it's just another meaningless TV station we choose to invest our emotions into.

(4,066 posts)First of all, get a sense of humor.
Second of all, if you were a die-hard Trumper, then you'd clearly have mental issues that your children would need to be concerned about. So helping you get away from FOX news and all of its lying would be the right thing to do

(6,916 posts)Rightwing talking point: Lets not talk about Politics
Truth: Its peoples lives at stake. This is a national emergency. Its not politics, its life. (Rightwing agenda: pretend everything is ok so the nation doesnt wake up while they rewrite the tax laws, pack courts with judges, and destroy the EPA and our healthcare. Dont let them silence you on important issues by telling you to stop talking about politics.)
Rightwing talking point: Fox and MSNBC.
Truth: Fox is a propaganda outlet, owned by rightwing billionaire Rupert Murdoch, that uses hate and lies to divide America and incite Americans against minorities and immigrants. MSNBC is a news station with some left wing hosts that is owned and run by a corporation which is conservative and profit-seeking.
NEVER say Fox and MSNBC in the same sentence and do not let anyone else do so. The rightwing agenda is to pretend the two are similar but on opposite sides. But this is a lie that no American who cares about democracy should tolerate.

(5,499 posts)And trust me, I've had some heated extended family discussions about politics. Nothing gets accomplished and everyone gets pissed off.
So gatherings at my house will continue to be non-political. Everyone can enjoy each other's company and reflect on our shared history.

(6,916 posts)As long as you recognize that a rightwing talking point and strategy is lets not talk about politics or why do you have to politicize this, I think your strategy is fine.
But if right wingers start hinting about politics, make sure to do the same. If they mention Obama or government, mention tax cuts for billionaires or the Koches. And move on.

(6,916 posts)Fox airs Nazi-style propaganda against immigrants.
This is not a joke and this is not an exaggeration.
If they were watching Hitler, would you turn it off? Of course you would. This is in the same ballpark.
Yes I compared Fox to Nazis. Fox propaganda about immigrants hits all the same themes as the Nazis.
Fox is poison. This is incredibly important. Any chance you get to turn it off, you do so, even if your parents are upset. This is a cult intervention.

(5 posts)that parent is setting themselves up for a lonely existence. My Limbaugh listening dad moved into what used to be our family cabin and since then he's always made us feel like guests when we visit, sometimes unwelcome guests. Now he's 90 and complains that we don't visit often enough. Funny, eh?

(6,916 posts)Its totally not worth your time to debate politics with a Fox/Limbaugh listener, as the rightwing media poison will just infect them later with another lie.
The only thing to do is talk to them about Fox and Murdoch and why they lie.

(35,328 posts)ago. The tv directly in front of me was on ESPN then suddenly Fox pops up. This asshole in back of me had the attendant to change it to Fox. I turned around and told him to put It back on ESPN or anything other than Fox. I got a dirty look but fuck those assholes. The gym is in WV

(32,080 posts)This was back when my gym left the remotes out, rather than leaving each set on a channel permanently. I don't remember what I was watching, but schmuck asked if he could change the channel. I said, as long as it's not Fox News, I don't care. I'm sure his dirty look was the same as the one you got. I stood my ground, and didn't give up that remote until I was finished. Kept getting dirty looks from him the whole time, too. Whatevs. "Fuck those assholes", indeed.
The "ladies only" area of my gym has a lounge with a TV. If Fox is on there, and nobody is watching, I change the channel. Interestingly, I rarely see Fox on it these days. They usually have it set on HGTV, which is the next channel up. I suspect I might not be the only one who turns off the Propaganda Channel.

I hate Fox and Trump as much as anyone here, but it's his house, his TV, and he's a grown man. She just created a serious trust issue with her father that may last a very long time. God help any grandkids that might get caught up in it.

(8,286 posts)I come from a family that has a tv on 24/7. They only shut it off when they are sleeping and some of them, need to put the timer on their bedroom tv in order to fall asleep. I don't understand those people that need that noise on all day long. I enjoy the silence of thinking and reading and can't stand to have that noise on in the background. I don't mind music as long as it's not rap or opera. ha.
One of my brothers has a tv in every room and garage. He will have four tvs running at once so that he never misses a beat. I think he can't stand to be alone is my guess even though he lives alone.

(146,288 posts)He always used to have Fox News on his monster flat screen. But, he's also a car nut, loves custom cars, and even builds his own hot rods. The last time I was at his house, I switched his TV to the REV'N channel, which offers non-stop automotive programming. He had never seen that channel before. He hasn't watched Fox News since. Now he bores everyone with stuff he saw on REV'N.
Best of all, he thanked me for finding that channel.

(28,979 posts)I imagine Dad is plotting his revenge.
But what if it's a more serious intervention? Example: If an armed agitated senior is being triggered by Fox to act on aggressive inclinations (in other words, he's scaring Grandma), I have no problem with a family member intervening. It is not about the first amendment, it's about public safety.
