Another sweet, touching Christmas story to counter the Trump slime:

snip

“With it being the day before break and Christmas right around the corner, most teachers bring their kiddos something such as books or little treats and occasionally in return receive something from their students,” she wrote on Facebook on Wednesday. “Today I received some chocolates, sweet handmade notes, some jewelry, but these Lucky Charm marshmallows stood out to me the most.”

All of her students, including the one who gave her the Lucky Charms, get a free breakfast every school day, she said, as well as a free or reduced-price lunch.

“This kiddo wanted to get my something so badly, but had nothing to give,” she wrote.

“So rather than give me nothing, this student opened up her free breakfast cereal this morning, took the packaging of her spork, straw, and napkin, and finally took the time to take every marshmallow out of her cereal to put in a bag—for me.”

The child gave her teacher all the sweetest--to the child the best--parts of the free breakfast cereal she gets at school as a low-income student. (I wish we were providing more nutritious food, though, for the free breakfasts these kids get!)

I am humbled by the love in action shown to me by that kid. And I am enraged that it happened at all

UPDATE: WOW!
I can share with complete honesty that I cannot believe how many people this has touched! I have received so many amazingly kind notes and messages from so many of you from all over the country. It makes me so proud of my kiddos that they have touched your hearts along with mine. Your generosity in offering gifts for both the student and I, donations to our school, and our classroom have not gone unnoticed. Due to certain restrictions, I am not allowed to accept gifts as a public employee of my state and district. That being said, if it is in your heart to give please do not hesitate to reach out to my principal through email at Andy.woehler@ksd.org

He will be able to help all of those who wish to give either to our school or classroom. I appreciate the kind sentiments and heartfelt messages more than you know.

My school and classroom are full of kind, giving, and amazing children and teachers. I have learned from so many before me and will continue to learn from my students and my colleagues. Truly I have learned as much from my students about life as they have learned about math, science, reading, and writing from me. Learning in my classroom will always be a two way street.

My wish for all of you is to remember this kind and simple gesture of love from one of my school babies and carry it with you and continue to spread love and kindness to everyone you meet-not just during this holiday season.

Thank you so much
Happy Holidays. 💕

My students were in a subsidized summer program for disadvantaged kids... Urban high school. They got free breakfast.

This was 12 years ago.

My memory of the breakfast was sugared cereal, milk, juice drink -- not juice, but a sugared drink. I believe there was also a doughnut or cookie involved.

My clearer memory was that most of it ended in the trash can. It was crap and the kids recognized it as crap.

It is not wrong to pool taxpayer resources to provide the basic needs of citizens. The primary purpose of a government is to protect the citizens who form it. Protection from starvation, malnutrition, disease, exposure, etc., should be shared by all citizens for all are at risk of succumbing to these maladies. This is at least as important as defense of threats from without.
