(35,662 posts)This afternoon as a neighbor packed up his car with gifts, grousing all the way, I explained, "This is why you move 1500 miles from your family."
Of course, you do have to put in some time on the phone, but it's way better than the fake family get-togethers.
Merry Christmas to you, too, Kajun Gal.

(68,556 posts)heartbroken if I couldn't see them...spent Christmas eve with the kids, big dinner presents, bells ( I play) , church. Call my brothers and sisters...going to rent a house in North Carolina for a family get together in July. We do it every year. One of my brothers is a Libertarian. We don't discuss politics...unless we want a good rousing discussion ( which we enjoy from time to time).

(17,912 posts)We use to split our holidays...Thanksgiving with family and Christmas just for us, visa versa every other year. Then we moved over 1000 miles away. Politics has really split our family in recent years anyway, so we're not missing much. Just peace, quiet and a little snow this Christmas. Glad you guys enjoyed yourselves. Merry Christmas to you too.

(6,228 posts)As life has moved on so has the our ways, ideas and how we fit in. Definitions of families has also expanded. More and more adults are single. How we celebrate has also expanded. My mother taught me many things. One of which has stuck with me. "You can be closer to your friends than your relatives." Enjoy!

(1,725 posts)We moved to Florida 30 years ago and created a wonderful life without the stress of difficult families to deal with. They try to push their religious beliefs on us constantly and they're very envious of us. We don't have children, only our 3 cats. We celebrated Christmas by throwing colored tissue paper on the floors and chasing them around the house. Great fun for them and us. A nice quiet holiday. Peace is a wonderful feeling.

We now enjoy Christmas instead of dread it. It's wonderful!

(25,853 posts)they always have to spend holidays with family. Even if everyone does get along and everyone has pretty much the same political opinions.
A couple of reasons for my thinking. One is that a young couple/new family sets up a bad dynamic by never doing any holidays for themselves. Eventually the older generation will be gone, or maybe they'll relocate for job reasons and need to rethink travel.
Another is that the weather is often crappy at Christmas and Thanksgiving. I was an airline ticket agent for ten years and only once was the weather good on both ends of Thanksgiving. Every other year if we didn't get nailed on the day before, we knew we'd get nailed on the return part. I absolutely won't fly during the holiday season. Plus, from where I live to where I want to go, driving makes more sense.
I think it's the way so many people feel obligated to spend holidays with family members, even ones they really don't like, that is the true culprit.

(2,166 posts)Hubby and I estranged ourselves from his (verbally) abusive brother and hothead wife. Life was great, but on Xmas eve we were ambushed as they came over for a "surprise" visit. I high tailed it out to the car before they saw me (out the back). My MIL claims she didn't know they were coming (despite her running to the car telling me that I need to get over it).
Moving far far away is looking REAL good.
