When I was a kid, we'd gather around the fire, grandma would hang the cauldron with the broth she'd worked on for days, bring it to a boil, and then we'd throw in the Christmas Rabbit.

You sing four verses of "Boil the Christmas Rabbit With Us" and then take the cauldron off the fire and let it simmer for at least 30 or 45 minutes.

Grandma would scoop it out with the ladle and if you got the rabbit's hind right leg, all your wishes would come true!

Well, actually fry them. And sometimes one of the children had made them pets and it caused some distress.

But no one in the family would have thought to wreck a young child’s belief in Santa a few days before Christmas. That would bring familial censure.
